1. The electoral college is anathema to the elites. 50% of the U.S. population lives in 9 states. 66% in 16 states.  The electoral college gives power to the people outside the big cities. Luckily, for the system to change over twenty state legislatures must vote to commit suicide.

   The entire primary system, (a stupid idea to begin with, the smoke-filled rooms always produced four competent candidates) would also be changed - no candidate will care about New Hampshire or Iowa - or thirty other states.
