1. I am assuming that the investigation showed that the bullet was actually fired from a gun. Rifling marks on the bullet, and an entrance hole in the window that showed a relatively nose forward impact.

   Because you could take a bullet, even a fired one you dug out of the backstop dirt at a rifle range, and fling it hard enough with a good slingshot to break a window. And the same kind of media reaction would occur. But the shape and angle of the hole in the window would give you away IF proper forensics were done. Assume nothing.

4. I was at my local range a few months back and found a near perfect fired bullet. It appeared to be one of those cheap Chinese bullets with a steel core. It was just laying in the dirt with no deformation that you would expect from a bullet that had impacted. It would be easy enough to find something like that and make use of it. It seems just too much of a coincidence that the bullet happened to go through Congress Critters window.

   Incidentally I got into something of a spat on a firearms forum regarding the distance a bullet can travel. A guy claimed he had seen a police case in England where a 7.62mm round had been fired on an army range at over five miles distance and had killed someone. I found it highly implausible unless the bullet hitched a ride on a passing jet! I believe the maximum distance is actually obtained at an angle of around 31-32 degrees to the horizontal. The text book 45degree angle only works in a vacuum. For something like a 7.62mm round would struggle to get beyond 2 1/2 miles
