  1. $6.2 Billion - and worth every friggin’ penny! Twice!

Just think! This li’l puppy, all by itself, could do Iran Like A Viking! in less than a day, and not suffer so much as a scratch.

  2. Kind of OT but in the pic of President Bush meeting with The One (tm) and the other living Presidents - did you catch that the former Dem POTUSs looked a damn site older than the two Republicans? Guess their nasty living is catching up with them - big time. Bodes well for The One (tm) - he’ll look like he!! after just 4 years - he isn’t going to get another 4 - if he even makes it through the first 4.

Hubby asks - did they change the rules concerning commissioning a ship for a living POTUS? Just wondering.

  3. Why surprised that so few in the media took notice?  If it might be good in some way, you sure won’t hear about it in the media, even the conservative media.  When GWB’s ratings hit their nadir and Congress’s ratings were even lower, there could have been a nice national dialog about what the American people need and want from their government.  Instead, we got article after article about how bad Bush was.

The Nimitz Class, 4.5 acres of sovereign U.S. Territory, where it’s needed, when it’s needed (yeah I stole that one).  By herself or accompanied by her battle group of submarines, cruisers and destroyers she’s just not what some tin pot a**hole wants to see off his coast in the morning.

Part of her escort will be guided missile destroyers, DDGs.  Some friends of mine once did a war game of one DDG against the U.S. Pacific Fleet of WWII.  At the end, the DDG went down, but only after she ran out of ammunition.  Most of the Pacific fleet preceded her to the bottom.  That’s the little one, just imagine her big brother.

  4. The estimate of attendance was actually over 20,000. Fox carried the ceremony live this morning and will repeat the broadcast on Sunday, but I’m not sure what time. I have a post up that has some video in it from this morning and from a couple days ago. There wasn’t a dry eye in our house this morning.

  5. She’s got me there. I was going to snag the video, but go visit her site and watch it there.
Yes, Fox had it on. And they have mentioned it a couple times during the day. And I did see one other network mention it late this afternoon.

It’s just my opinion that this should have been something approaching a national holiday, covered on all the networks. It isn’t a big deal; it’s a HUGE deal. Instead we get stories about Obama’s toe cheese. (Ok, I made that up, but you understand)

  6. I think the rebroadcast is at 1 pm on Sunday.

They said this morning that this is the first time in history that a namesake has been at the commissioning of “his” ship. Something tells me that with all the honors President Bush 41 has had in his life, this one will be the most meaningful. When he called the crew to man the rails for the first time, I totally lost it.

  7. Well then, I think Fox made a mistake. Either that, or they’re really REALLY nuanced:

    Navy Unveils USS Jimmy Carter
    Saturday, February 19, 2005

GROTON, Conn. — The USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) entered the Navy’s fleet Saturday as the most heavily armed submarine ever built, and as the last of the Seawolf class of attack subs that the Pentagon ordered during the Cold War’s final years.

The $3.2 billion Jimmy Carter was commissioned Saturday, the first submarine named after a living ex-president. Carter, himself a submariner during his time in the Navy, was on hand for the ceremony signaling the end of an era in submarining.

“The most deeply appreciated and emotional honor I’ve ever had is to have this great ship bear my name,” Carter said in remarks prepared for the ceremony at the Naval Submarine Base New London.

Carter was joined by his wife, Rosalynn, former Vice President Walter Mondale and his wife, Joan, and Stansfield Turner, CIA director in the Carter administration.

The 2,500 people on hand Saturday cheered as Carter, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the only president to serve on a submarine, handed the boat’s long glass to the navigator, Lt. Stephen Karpi.

Really really nuanced ... because a submarine, even one that’s 453 feet long like SSN 23 here, is a BOAT, not a SHIP.

  8. LOL. Maybe Carter is just too forgettable. Or maybe I misheard. Or maybe the media doesn’t know that we have submarines too. Let’s see, 2500 vs. 20,000 on hand, I vote for forgettable.

  9. How appropriate for Jimmah.  A vessel that sinks out of sight, emerges periodically to wreak havoc and then disappears again.

  10. Awesome, awesome ship. Now they just need to park it mid-coastal Atlantic for the next 6-12 months. *AHEM*

  11. I hate to rain on the parade, but whatever happened to the tradition of only naming ships after DECEASED presidents/admirals/heroes?

This new fad is in poor taste. It smacks of influence peddling. I expect that the USS Barack Hussein Obama (USS BHO DD666) is already in dry dock!

  12. Amazing isnt it. 6.2 billon buys us the most advanced war machine on the face of the earth and another 6.? billion bought us a failed Chrysler motors who announced today that they are still not going to build any new cars in the forseeable future until demand rises or prior supply is dimished.
And of course we all know Obenothing is planning on spending umpteen billions on who knows what kind of crap in the name of saving us from our evil capitalist selves.
See, I was able to make this post political, Bad Me, Bad Me!

  13. She’s a beautiful ship. And being in a Navy family (British RN) I’m jealous as hell. The UK govt could easily afford new carriers (or even a decent Navy) if they weren’t so intent on shovelling welfare down the underclasses’ mouths.
