I do not know when she got fed up with the abuse but it was long ago, before moonstruck, mermaids many more films and a heap of No 1 hits, I suspect, like Tina Turner the abuse and the need to rise above it generated the drive and passion in the voice. Sonny became a politician, says it all!

See, I know why Sonny entered politics. As a businessman running a restaurant in Kalifornia he got tired of the ‘red/Democrat’ tape.
As for Cher, what has she ever done? Alleged abuse by Sonny? Numerous lousy films. Hasn’t had a decent song since she and Sonny split. And dresses like a tramp.

It’s true her voice was good, better if we’re taking measurements but what she didn’t have was direction and focus. Without that, one has zero.
Yeah, he was shrimp like and had to overcome the usual taunts I suppose. But he wasn’t lazy and good voice or not, who knows if we’d have heard of her but for him. Talent unfortunately does not always win out. In fact, even good looks won’t always do it although it gets one thru the door.Cher has stage presence, or she did at the beginning anyway. I guess she still does. There are so many wanna bees who once on stage put an audience to sleep. Unless they bite off the head of some bird or strip on stage. And they will always find an audience.
Cher has from the beginning, in my opinion, always had great looks and knew how to face an audience and get em on her side. I even liked her before the nose job. She really doesn’t need to dress so badly. I’ve seen her dressed very sexily and looking very desirable. To me anyway. And she looked far better then she does in this very old by now costume.Politics. Christopher is right about the restaurant thing. I can’t remember all the details altho they are easy to look up. Living in CA at the time, we were treated to the blow by blow arguments between Sonny and the Dems in charge at the time. But it didn’t really make national headlines till he was elected mayor.
Sonny was clearly guilty of one of the very worst offenses imaginable to his opponents.
He was guilty of another one of the many “ISMs” in our world.
Republican-ism.He proved to be very popular and fair minded. In an industry of huge egos, he was one of the genuine nice guys.
Just think folks...in a Parallel Universe, Sonny Bono would be Speaker of the House right now!
Twas a match up of a good singer who was pretty too, and a guy who knew how to promote the pair. Sonny could have gone into artist management easily with his determination and drive. He made it all happen. Without him, she might have been another pretty girl with a good voice adrift among the other thousands who also had good voices and looked pretty. Of course, we’ll never know. Cher at some point might well have been the exceptional, artist/manager to succeed.
They needed each other and for awhile, it worked.
