  1. That is so funny, I doubt the greedt bastards will learn but, and I live in Ontario, it is us who pay the huge rates in our bills. One point it is called “hydro” here because that is how a lot is generated. I read it costs a total of 3.7cents a KWH for all costs to produce from hydro so why steal 60 to 80 cents aKWH for the new sort of renewables?? what a bunch of con men.

  2. What, you don’t get hit up with “delivery” charges like we do here in NJ? Oh yeah, we have to pay to rent the friggin’ wires for the microseconds our personal electricity flows along it. I think our total works out to 22¢ per KWH. And you think you’ve got a con?

  3. I’m a fan of hard numbers, so here, let me offer up the numbers on my “Hydro One” bill (in Ontario) from November 10, 2010 covering a time period of October 12, 2010 - November 10, 2010.

    Metered electricity:  750.22 kWh.
    Bottom line “You pay this” price:  $134.06

    Dividing that out, I’m paying a real-world price of 17.87 cents per kWh (on that bill, it can vary slightly bill to bill based on how much I use during the day, and WHEN, which will become more clear as we go.)

    Now let’s see how they break this all apart on my bill…

    Adjusted usage:  814 kWh.  (750.22 * 1.085)

    [ They multiply our metered usage by 8.5% there to cover “Line loss”. ]

    We get billed at three different rates depending on when in the day we use our power, and the rate schedules differ slightly between summer and winter time periods.  I think they declare “summer billing” over at the end of October.

    Here’s the electricity charges:

    Electricity: Summer
    $ 8.67:  On-Peak: 87.61 kWh @ 9.9000 cents
    $10.28:  Mid-Peak: 128.56 kWh @ 8.0000 cents
    $19.15:  Off-Peak: 361.37 kWh @ 5.3000 cents

    Subtotal Summer electricity:  $38.10

    Electricity: Winter
    $ 5.93:  On-Peak: 59.88 kWh @ 9.9000 cents
    $ 2.71:  Mid-Peak: 33.48 kWh @ 8.1000 cents
    $19.15:  Off-Peak: 143.08 kWh @ 5.1000 cents

    Subtotal Winter electricity:  $27.79

    Total electricity charges:  $65.89

    $53.50:  Delivery Charge

    $ 5.85:  Regulatory Charge (the costs of administering the wholesale electricity system, or if you prefer: Because we can make you pay some more and you can’t do Jack about it.)

    $ 5.25:  Debt Retirement charge (paying down the debt of the former Ontario Hydro after it was mismanaged, by the government, into the damned ground.  When will it be paid off?  THEY WON’T SAY!  Translation:  Never.  Awesomesauce.)

    Subtotal of all of that so far:  $118.64

    $15.42:  13% HST sales tax (5% federal GST combined with 8% provincial, applied to the electricity and delivery charges)

    TOTAL:  $134.06

    The government is admitting our costs are going up by 50% over the next few years, so my real-world cents-per-kWh will be about 26.8, and this bill would have cost me $201.09.

    Why the 50% increase? Because Ontario’s Liberals paid out the ass for solar and wind electricity, WAY WAY above market rates for electricity, and it’s pulling the aggregate costs of nuclear/hydro-electric/coal/oil/natural-gas/solar/wind/purchased-power-from-other-states-or-provinces up.  All to be “Green”.

    Oh yeah, and they’re hell-bent to shut down our coal-fired plants too, and replace that power generation with unicorn farts and rainbows, apparently.  Our demand is already AT our capacity, but they want to replace dependable 24/7 production facilities with intermittent green power sources that are inherently UN-reliable.

    The fuckwits are in charge in this province, and we’re all going to pay, and pay dearly for it.
