I wonder if this will cause a spike in the price of Popcorn worldwide???????????????????
I bet the people land up worse off in the end ! so far the only revolution that worked for the people was the American on when us brits were tossed out!
Pardon me. But did we just go to war without a war declaration from Congress? At least President Bush got two Congressional ‘authorizations’ for Afghanistan and Iraq. He didn’t even need one for Iraq––we’d been in a state of war with Iraq since Gulf War 1. No peace treaty, just a ‘cease-fire’ that Saddam violated constantly.
I’d also like to know what our goals are?
And what’s our exit strategy?
What debacle? I’m not quite sure - we killed Saddam and his evil sons - took out a number of al-Qaeda people. While not perfect - and like all the countries in that area - a tad of instability - but I think given where we were in 2003 - Much, much better. Could it be better - yes but then no one took my advice to nuke ‘em till they glowed. So we work with what we have.
And you know as well as I - when Slick Willie was in charge - the Left/Liberals et al were screaming and believing the same intell that GWB used to move forward - and that was the only difference - GWB was a man, an adult and stood up and DID SOMETHING.
Debacle - that is what is happening right now - as The Won goes on vacay (again).
A slight correction wardmama4. We didn’t kill Saddam. He was captured, stood trial by his own people, and was hanged by them. I saved the video of the hanging.
I think the Obama Administration’s theme song is ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy!’
Chris, I think the president gets something like a 48 hour pass for military activity, then Congress has to be told about it. Without formal declaration - which we don’t bother with anymore - military actions have to be over with in 90 days, UNLESS they’ve been given a financial allocation by Congress. Look up the War Powers Resolution. Good luck trying to understand it, and more luck trying to figure out if it’s actually constitutional.
The sort-of-written rule is the President can call out the dogs if the nation is under imminent threat. That’s that “clear and present danger” stuff you’ve heard about.
But yeah, it sure is funny ain’t it. Last time it was 14+ UN resolutions and that fat slob Teddy Kennedy wetting his pants with his “Why are we rushing to war?” crap MORE THAN A YEAR LATER. This time it’s one resolution and the bombs are falling before the ink is even dry. And OF COURSE it was done on a weekend when Congress is not in session, but as of yet none of the talking heads have noticed that.
It’s no wonder the rest of the world can’t understand America. America can’t understand America. With diametrically opposed leaders every few years, our foreign policy goes back and forth like a metronome, and through the MSM “popular opinion” reverses itself constantly on highly similar issues.
Oh, and here is Glenn Greenwald, Mr. Instapundit, the Puppy Blender himself, reminding us of Barack Obama’s ( the noted Constitutional scholar ) very own words:
… but just consider what candidate Barack Obama said about this matter when—during the campaign—he responded in writing to a series of questions regarding executive power from Charlie Savage, then of The Boston Globe:
Q. In what circumstances, if any, would the president have constitutional authority to bomb Iran without seeking a use-of-force authorization from Congress? (Specifically, what about the strategic bombing of suspected nuclear sites—a situation that does not involve stopping an IMMINENT threat?)
OBAMA: The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.
As Commander-in-Chief, the President does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the President would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent.
Obama’s answer seems dispositive to me on the Libya question: “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.” And he went on to say that the President could constitutionally deploy the military only “in instances of self-defense.”
So candidate Obama feels that even an attack is unjustified, and we all know from the Bush years that the left feels that “imminent” really means either “the nukes are inbound at 20,000 feet” or “landing craft are in actual contact with our beaches”. Funny how the rules change ain’t it? The Dems are utterly two faced douchebags, right down to the bone.
I can guarantee you that, once Obama has committed US forces to pacify Libya forever, all on international humanitarian grounds, he won’t do jack shit for the Darfour region of Sudan or for any other nation where the local tyrant is on a killing spree against his own people. Well, unless they have major quantities of oil for export. Hey, remember that “no blood for oil” slogan from 1991? Turn on the TV and watch all the hippies NOT out there protesting right now, even though the Libya situation is as much, or more so, a “blood for oil” moment than our involvement in Iraq.
Rule Four would be “Never get involved in a land war in Asia.”
Rule Five must therefor be “Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line.”
Sorry, I just couldn’t resist throwing in a little bit of snark.
Yes, I agree with Peiper: off Gadaffi and his minions ASAP. Then go home, after letting the Libbies know that we will buy their oil, that the oil will continue to flow or else they’ll get the next bombing, and that moderate economic aid and trade deals will follow if they put together a new government that treats the people decently. Establish a junta or a batshit crazy pisslamic state, and we bomb you again. After all, we don’t actually need any people living in Libya; a couple hundred engineers from Shell and BP can run the oil business, so the rest of them can go pound sand. And they have lots of sand.
Well So far all we did was toss 112 M-80s at the fools .But its ALL GOOD,
One cost effective aspect of Libya is that >90% of the entire country is deserted desert. Libya is just as much of a “strip nation” along the ocean as is Egypt along the Nile. So even though the whole nation is a bit bigger than Alaska, like Alaska almost all of the settlements are along the coast. Think of the cost savings in bombs and jet fuel.
