Arrgh, English English! My first read through, I thought he’d already been in jail for 7.5 years.
Even if he serves the whole term, that still seems a bit light. Laws are different in the UK, but it looks to me like two category 4/6 crimes here, death by careless driving while under the influence. At 28 weeks preggers, UK considers that a viable life outside the womb, so this is two crimes. Good judge to see that. A 4/6 carries a maximum 14 years, so this guy was looking at 28 years tops. 7.5 is barely 1/4 of that. I don’t see how the paper finds 12 years to be “about standard” unless it’s typical there to hand out 40% penalties.
And it’s likely he’ll be out in less than half? Gosh, saying “sorry” is worth up to 25 years of freedom. Musta been one helluva an apology.

Not sure if he said that for the same reason I would: If I were a lawyer, I wouldn’t defend the obviously guilty. Might stick around to ensure a fair trial, though if he’s guilty, what’s the point? I only say that because I’ve a couple of friends who are lawyers and they defended people who confessed to the crimes. Not sure I’d do that. Admittedly, not capital crimes. Petty theft, driving sans insurance, etc. Not talking about rape or murder.
Indeed, I’ll go one bit farther: I got a Muslim before me for murder? I don’t care if it’s his wife or daughters he killed for heresy. Heresy is not against the law in the West. Yes, I can, and would, cherry-pick the law for Muslims. He’s getting the Sharia punishment for murder. I don’t care if Sharia law allows it for heresy. English and American law doesn’t. Beheaded, as soon as I issue my ruling. Don’t want him fleeing justice do we?
How is it in our world today, violent criminals are seen as heroic victims of society. It was not long ago, punishment meant something. If you stole a man’s horse, you were hung. Now, you can murder someone, and get a slap on the wrist. Even if the scumbag gets convicted, he spends 20+ years on death row, while the families of the victims are forced to keep peeling back that painful scab never allowing it to heal until the murderer is finally killed decades later.
Our system is sad. This may be the rare time when I agree with how third world countries handle a problem.
