  1. I’m sure the good people of West Virgina are going to welcome this news with open arms. After all, slag heaps in their part of the planet are considered environmental disaster areas, leaching pollutants into the ground water, concentrating toxins at the surface, blah blah blah.

    To think that UNESCO now hails these as “natural places” with “an extraordinarily rich ecosystem” with a positive “role to play” in our world ... my God. It must be party time in Appalachia. Call the EPA right now and get them started on the kow-towing immediately!

  3. Having worked in the Nord Pas des Calais I am not surprised by this. The region is like Mordor in parts.
