Someday, I will read an article about events in Africa where the lives of the people living there have been improved by the end of colonialism. Say what you will about paternalistic colonial masters, suppression of indigenous culture, the theft of wealth by foreigners, whatever, the best modern African government makes the worst colonial rule look pretty good.
In all honesty, I do not know how African tribal politics can be adapted to the modern age and modern weapons. I think it would probably take a long transition from being a colony to independence. During that time, the governmental and social structures could be modified to mimic almost any of the European or Asian models that actually work. The first stage up from colonial status would be territorial status (eg. Puerto Rico, Guam) followed by a period of semi independent commonwealth status and eventually ending with full independence. It’s also possible that the commonwealth status will be enough for the people of an emerging country. It’s not necessarily bad to have a big brother protector.
