  4. Actually… I haven’t eaten veal since I was in HS for humanitarian reasons and I’m heading in the same direction with beef and pork. I don’t like the fact that one of God’s creatures-I believe that animals have souls-should need to die to feed me. I can’t be a true vegetarian because I’m a non shark seafood junkie-some poultry too. I saw a show on A&E that was about slaughtering cowsthe Kiwi’s are SHOOTING PIGS WITH A BOLT GUN?!!
Pigs are on my no eat list now.
I also have an old rabbit coat that was a hand me down from my aunt-in my ma’s basement. I wore it once in Jr. High and now I’m going to donate it to PETA. Fur looks better on animals than people.

I’ve always been ‘left’ on animals.
    No apologies.

  8. I agree with Barb about veal. Also any animal that is penned without sunlight in a tight space all its life.  That sucks & I will not support it.

  9. The two most common elements in the known universe:

    Hydrogen and Stupidity.  :rulez:

The Kiwis have their alloted share of moonbats, apparently.

If’n y’all want some “free range” porkers, just come (appropriately armed) to western NC, there are plenty of feral porkers there just waiting to be harvested… Really Big Varmints.  pumpiniron pigs They’re a random mix of wild boar and escapee “farm” type oinkers. Jurassic Pork, indeed.

  10. "Electric bolt gun” - it’s basically a souped up taser.  Delivers a fast, humane electric shock to the nervous system and shuts it down.  It sounds mean and scary, but it’s a heck of a lot more humane than an ax to the skull.

As for animals having souls… Nope.  Nowhere in the Bible does it say that.  It does say that we are to be good stewards, but animals are simply another resource on this planet, entrusted to our care and use just as the earth, the skies, and the seas are.  In fact, Biblically, animals are treated as resources.  In the Old Testament, animals were ritually sacrified as a substitute for the sinner, a practice that became obsolete with the coming of Christ.  Killing animals for food or to protect persons and property was very common.  David, before he became king, was a shepherd boy, and frequently killed predators that attacked his livestock.  He even boasts of killing lions and bears, with a simple sling and stone, not the cleanest kill by any means.  Broken bones and a squalling, suffering animal, waiting for the final stone to crush its skull, would not have been uncommon.  If killing or mistreating animals were a sin in and of itself, if animals stood on an equal or near-equal footing with humans, then the Bible itself would be in error.  It is not, therefore, a sin to kill an animal, nor to inflict suffering upon one.  However, if we are not good stewards of God’s creation, not responsible in our use, inflicting -meaningless- suffering, then we become liable for the mis-use.

And wearing fur?  I don’t wear fur coats, but that’s simply because I like a leather coat better.
I like my pets, two cats and a dog.  And I have no hesitation at hunting their wild cousins.  In fact, there’s a problem mountain lion in the area that I’m considering going after, and coyotes are always fair game, for the same reasons - they’re pests, and not legally protected for that reason.  You’d have to be pretty hungry to eat either, so the only thing left that’s usable is their fur.  Interesting dilemma, I think.  Can’t leave the wild predators alone, not when they’re making nuisances (and dangers) of themselves to our pets and families, but to waste the entire animal would be irresponsible at best.  The most responsible and reasonable course of action, therefore, would be to go ahead and kill the predators that threaten livestock, pets, and family, and then to make some use of the remains, whether that use is food, fur, or even decoration (just don’t be tacky about it).

The questions one must ask, therefore, are these: If I kill this animal, will some use be made of it, and if I don’t kill it, will some harm result?  If the answer is yes to either, then I don’t see any problem with it.

  11. OCM,
It’s a sorry state of affairs, but your last sentence is unfortunately all too true

  12. I think we have a responsibility to provide livestock with food, water, shelter and some space to move around in.  We do not have the right to f*** with them indefinitely, like we do with the Stratford Goose or some of the grotesque DNA crap.  NOTE: breeding for desired traits is OK and limited messing with their genes—not monsters who have no resemblance to a real animal.

Then we give them a quick painless death.  I cannot abide cruelty to animals.

P.S. Animals have no “rights”, any more than they have “responsibilities”. WE have the responsibilities.

  13. Dammit - who gives a rip about these activists - altho I don’t eat as much meat as I used to, I enjoy a roast now & then and I also can make a mean weiner schnitzel (which I will plan to make this weekend having already bought the veal)...........Don’t pay any attention to these so-called activists - I’ll eat what I want to..............

  14. Dropping the philosophical prose for the moment, I think that the one on the left is pretty cute and I would welcome the opportunity to make her squeal.

I do think that we as humans need to be more respectful of animals. Veal is clearly wrong. Sex with animals is wrong. Damn, I wish some one would have told the Clintoons that....
