  1. Just a small nitpick, the Pope is not the leader of Christianity, the pope is the leader of the Catholic Church.

  2. The Pope is the only image of “Chrisendom” in the minds of billions of people. In that sense, yes, he represents all of us Christians, even we non-Romans.

I discussed guns with some lefties here in Seattle (imagine that!). There attitude was not unlike that of the non-Muslims who are tsk-tsking the Pope. People say Benedict should not have spoken up because that will only rile up the Muslims, so we should just be quiet. These gun controllers said that people who live in bad neighborhoods are asking for trouble by living there so they deserve what they get if they are robbed or whatever, but there is no excuse to own guns.

So, everyone should just walk on eggs and avoid trouble, not resist it. Bizarre attitude. I am not saying one should go looking for trouble of try to provoke it, but if everyone were like these folks, we’d be a bunch of mincing hand wringers still living in the trees.

  3. Oh, nit-pickey, nit-pickey, Robert. I said “The leader of the Church Of Christ” not “the leader of Christianity”. Since the Catholic church was founded by St. Peter as the first Christian church, I think we can safely refer to it as the “Church Of Christ” ... as opposed to the “Church of Scientology” or the “Church of Mormon” or the “Baptist Church” or the “First Presbyterian Church” or ... you get the picture.

As I stated, I’m not Catholic but I feel a helluva lot closer to the Pope than I do to Ayatollah Khomeini. So why aren’t Bush, Blair, Chirac, Merkel et al defending him? What about “Blowhard” Chavez, who is Catholic? None of them uttered a single word. And while we’re on the subject, why haven’t Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts and Jimmy Swaggert jumped in on the Pope’s side?

    Just curious ....

  4. To me, the telltale silence indicates only one thing.  The silent ones consider that they have nothing to lose by remaining silent--and much to lose, if they say anything.

I daresay that for most of them, “faith” is only a banner to wave when it is convenient--or lucrative.  The silence, which His Holiness alone has broken, would appear to confirm as much.
