  1. There’s a book called “The Victorian Internet”, about the new telegraph technology. By the 1940’s telegrams were associated with bad news—WW2 death notices.  The deaf continued to rely on them until TTY and the WWW.

    Long distance calls were also grim; you didn’t get one unless it was serious.  Then came the commercial, “Reach out and touch someone”.
