Skip the CFLs, go straight to LEDs.
LEDs give better light, last longer and pull far less power than CFLs.
CFLs only work if they are not switched on and off often, use them where it is on when you wake or get home and off at bed time, cheapest to run and longest life is quartz lamps on a dimmer, 240volt is more efficient but low voltage is still better than CFLs in most places. I dont think they have banned quartz halogen lamps yet (also referred to as quartz or as halogen ) also whatever they want to ban for the house there will allways be var lamps for sale and the low voltage fittings use 12v. When I moved into my new shop, there were 18 200-watt Edison bulbs in three rows lighting the room. Nice and bright.
Wisconsin had a big rebate program going on CFLs, so I bought a bunch and retrofitted the shop with 26 watt units. They worked - took a bit to warm up when first turned on, but the light was adequate.
Then I got a contract project designing a microprocessor product capable of measuring 20 millivolts with 24-bit resolution. Had sporadic problems with unstable data. I discovered the problem went away when the CFLs were turned off.
The damn things radiate RF garbage as efficiently as they radiate light. If I had my ham setup working, I would have found the problem much earlier.
I am now running 100W Edison bulbs. No RFI, and they help heat the shop in the colder months.
Oh yeah OCD man Brits are idiots..... just like this maroon http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1307901/Student-electric-shocked-nipples-sues-teacher-warning-him.html
