  1. I doubt most Americans of any age would know what gammon is either. We simply call it ham, although there is a small difference: gammon needs to be cooked first. Guess they haven’t figured out smoked meat yet in the UK.

Typical school system to make mountains out of molehills too. I guess this is a world-wide scholastic behavior? Fer cryin’ out loud ... take the ham away from the sprog and give her mung beans or some halal shit. And STFU. Sacking the lunch lady is insanely over the top. One wonders if, given the UK’s history of antisemitism, if she would have got the same axe for feeding gammon to a Jewish kid who kept Kosher. But OTOH, I’m certain a 7yo Jewish kid would be smart enough to play “spot the pork” and win every time.

  2. "those fluffy balls” ... Nerf balls?

OMG, if my parents sued the school every time I got hurt in gym class I’d never have had to work a day in my life. I broke a tooth doing some idiot coordination drill in 3rd grade ... everybody run this way in a line, and when the whistle blows turn around and run the other way. Problem was the kid with the hearing problem couldn’t hear the whistle too well. Pow! Another time the big ape who taught PE decided to punish a couple boys who were talking, so he whipped a soccer ball at them. And missed by a mile, hitting me square in the face. Broke my glasses, blacked my eyes, might have knocked me out I don’t remember. God Lord, in this day we’d have his job for that, plus $5 million cash, and his nuts hanging on the wall as a trophy. Psychopathic pedo-Nazi!!

  3. Drew, Gammon is actually very good and is the more expensive part of Miss Piggy. Gammon steaks are nice.
No ... Brits do smoked meat very well.  And their smoked bacon is far better than ours in the USA. At least that’s been my experience.  No matter how good the package looks in a market in the USA, or to be fair I should limit that to Ca. where home is (or should be) it never comes up to the taste of Brit bacon. Which is usually fresher too btw.

Markets and food here are incredibly good overall.  It’s one of the things they have right.
The variety is much appreciated and the ice cream can’t be beat.

And one of those stores is German owned btw. They undercut the big guys on the same items.

Cheerios tho is weird. Close but not quite the same, even the original brand.  They coat it with some kind of sweetener or maybe it’s honey. So I rinse it off in a strainer.

  4. US bacon is appalling. Its more fat than bacon. Tastes good, but you have to put double the amount you think you need because of the waste. English smoked back bacon is hardly any fat and even “fatty” streaky bacon has half the fat of US bacon. This sacking of the dinner lady is likely to cost them (ie us) dear as I bet she sues for unfair dismissal. Typical councils run by bed wetters who think pandering to the mad mullahs is what people want. If muslims send their kids to state schools then they should give them packed lunches or expect to be served “dirty” pork. Don’t like it? Then sod off back to to pisspotistan.

  5. Lyndon, I’m about to post an update on this story.
As you may know, it wasn’t muslims who brought any complaint and in fact as stated, many of them thought the head was way over the top.
But have you seen the latest on this?

The girl’s family who are converts apparently, are moving to a muslim country. Good.

The villain here is that head who could have done things a lot differently but I guess pc rule the day under her directorship.

btw ... re. bacon.  It has always been very difficult for us to find bacon back home that was really very good. Nothing close to here as you already know.

Oh, we have an new Aldi that opened tight smack next door to our Waitrose which is no more than a mile down the road. Aldi streaky is okay, not a fan of Waitrose bacon but do like the Tesco smoked streaky bacon. You guys really have some great markets here. I wish Morrisons were closer. They have a nice cafeteria, good prices and great breakfast menu and a really good bakery. But heck. It’s in Romsey.

For our readers who don’t know ...

Romsey lies on the River Test, which is famous for fly fishing, predominantly trout.[2] It is one of the principal towns in the Test Valley Borough. A large Norman abbey dominates the centre of the town.
Romsey was home of the 20th-century soldier and statesman Lord Mountbatten of Burma, the 19th-century British prime minister Lord Palmerston, and the 17th-century philosopher and economist William Petty.
