School Bussing Works?  Where?

Now then ... Having read the article I just couldn’t resist writing to Ms. Clark at the Daily Mail.

Here’s my letter to her.

l.clark@dailymail.co.uk

Dear Ms. Clark,

Re. your article that school bussing works.

It doesn’t and has been forced on millions of people who have made the effort and financial sacrifice to live and educate their young in schools that are local to them, with people they have something in common with.

As an American living here (temporarily), I was quite interested in the take on the subject by Mr. Phillips.

I’m most curious to know just what planet he’s on.  It most assuredly does not work and if it appears so, it’s only in the minds of those who most want to believe this myth or benefit from it in some political way.

Left out of the article no doubt because perhaps nobody told him, because he wasn’t speaking to the many who could have, is the idea of getting young kids up two hours earlier then usual and in the dark (during winter months) to then make an hours trip to some far distant school.
A school where more often then not the children are isolated in spite of the best efforts of school staff. That is, if an effort is seriously made.  Bussed into or through neighborhoods where in normal circumstances parent are loathe to go themselves.

Bussing of course has been a boon to private schools for those who can afford it.  Others have opted for home schooling.

Most Sincerely,

  1. Great post Peiper, but we’re going to have to give you lessons in hunting down links. grin

The story you want is this one I think. I simply Googled “Daily Mail Laura Clark”, went to the first article I found that she had written, then clicked on the “more by this author” link next to her name. A Sort By Date, and a quick scan of her 10 most recent articles was all it took. Hunting stuff on the net takes a bit of practice. Keep at it; you’ll become a pro in no time.

I thought all English kids with money went to private schools anyway? Is that now a thing of the past? Also, reading that the UK now has “white flight” is a little upsetting.

Gotta love the Daily Mail though ... one of the top stories is “My instant boob job from 36A to 36DD”. That’s some SERIOUS reportering!

  2. Uh, I think so, maybe. But I meant the kind of school you have to pay directly for, not the kind that gets provided out of your taxes. Unless they do things really really differently over there?
