  1. Things that make you go Hmmm, “underwater antenna assembly that is part of a coastal monitoring system”.  No wonder they didn’t let the Americans help!  That sucker is most likely top secret underwater radar!  The same for the Kursk, the Russians were testing new top secret torpedos and the stranded sub had other technology they didn’t want us to see.  The article doesn’t mention exactly how this operation by the British was performed, but I would guess the Russians made the British teach them how to operate the Super Scorpio remote controlled sub.  Or at the very least only one British operator was allowed to assist along with a KGB agent (or whatever they call it nowadays) over his shoulder.

Putin still troubles me.  He is very much an old school communist and as such carries a lot of baggage from the cold war.  Let us hope their joint war games with the Chinese continue with more accidents.  Makes one wonder if we have a stealth sub that just might be watching very closely.

  2. The story has changed, apparently, the British beat us there and some Americans were with the British to help.  The underwater antenna assembly became a fishing net again and then changed to undersea cables.  Don’t know what to believe but judging how propaganda works (as well as our lame ass media) it is likely that the antenna story might be the truth and that information was being given out by multiple parties and someone goofed and told the media the truth.  The Russians are not accustomed to a media assault.  Didn’t they just ban ABC and refuse to give them any more press?  Then again, the media isn’t to be trusted and not just because they are biased, they are pretty freaking stupid and will run with any story.  This explains the constantly changing reports after any major event.  They just run with whatever some nutbag tells them without first checking the accuracy of the statements in an effort to be ‘first’ with the exclusive information!

OCM, of course having countries working together is a noble goal.  Then you knock it out of left field with the hope of space alien allies and their anal probes!  Wow, you are a trip, aren’t you? (or is that on a trip)?

  3. The irony here is that the only Russian rescue submarine in that area was the one that was stuck on the bottom.

I’m thinking that the translation of the word that gave us ‘antenna’ in the news reports was probably meant to be ‘transducer’. Radio (radar) waves don’t penetrate water very well. I’d suggest that it’s part of a sonar system, whether active or passive. Surfing the submarine blogs I did note one of them telling about some unknown active sonar off the Russian coast.

We have a passive system deployed in several key places in the oceans. Do a search on SOSUS.

  4. Hope Putin realizes that he needs to cooperate with the rest of the world as the US and Britain do...............

  5. The trouble with Putin is that he was loyal Communist who for a time ran the KGB!  He must be internally torn both socially and politically on an emotional level.  It’s clear he still doesn’t completely understand how a republic should work nor does he have a good understanding of democracy.  On the one hand he seems to want to be democratic but at the same time he cannot let go of power.  In the old world, the government told the population what to do, in the new world the people tell the government what to do.  He is having a good deal of difficulty reconciling the difference.  He is also having trouble trusting the people.  Hence the recent crackdowns against the free market and press.  I remember recent events in the last few years where both Bush and Rice were pretty shocked at his verbal responses at times.  They were a bit concerned when Putin seemed to be spewing heavily Communist rhetoric in response to questions from the press.  He doesn’t understand how the public can be so bold and powerful when dealing with the government.  He’s an old school relic.  Here’s to hoping he gets replaced by someone who listens to the proud people of Russia.
