  1. Luxury tax…

Reminds me of what Albany, OR did some years ago.  They wanted more tax revenue, so they imposed a 1 cent per gallon tax on gas.  It lasted about a week.  They were informed that only the state could levy a gas tax and they were going to be sued if they didn’t remove it.  So, they got their creative little minds together and found something they could do and there was nothing anyone could do about it.  They started a 3 percent tax on natural gas and called it a privilage tax.  This meant that those who did not have natural gas were privilaged to not have to pay it.  No fanfare or announcment either, it just started showing up on the bill.  About 2 years later, they decided to levy a 3 percent privilage tax on electricity as well.  So, if you had gas, you got to pay twice.

What amused me was that, at least in Albany, if you resided in the city limits you were required to have electricity or the city could come along and evict you after some time.  So much for the privilage of having electricity; it should have been called a requirement tax.

All this is just an example of how creative these people can become when looking for tax revenue.  Will the government give up a tax on phones?  Not without a fight, I’m sure.

  3. No, it’s not chump change.  And the federal subscriber line charge if for each line you have.  At one time I had two phone lines, one for me and one for the kids.  $6.50 x 2 plus the other taxes for the 2nd line as well.

  4. If this was used to pay for a war finished over a century ago...what is it paying for now? Not like there are any vets of that war left...and probably all their children are gone, and the grandchildren are dying off…

  6. Don’t forget the “Al Gore invented the internet” tax…

There IS NO SUCH THING as a “temporary” tax. Ever.
