  1. i could NEVER and will never understand how the conclusion was reached that these driving certificates would satisfy Homeland Security concerns.

Recently a friend of mine, who is married to a member of the armed forces, returned from being stationed abroad. She went to her new local DMV, to change her DL from one state to the other, she was unable to do it that day, due to having to show extensive proof of who she was- she had a current DL in the state she had lived in prior to going overseas, yet, she was also required to present official stamped birth certificate, social security card,a current utility bill, or current local paystub, her official marriage license( to show why her birth name was different from her current legal name), and oh, by the way- if she had ever been previously married- the official divorce paperwork).

She had brought along her current other state DL, her SS card, her valid military family member ID card,a copy of her husbands reassignement orders, her valid passport, but did not take her birth certificate and marriage lic with her. While she could produce all of the paperwork required by a quick trip home, she relayed that while she stood in line, a person in front of her, who happened to be hispanic, was required to produce less documentation as proof that they were who they purported themselves to be.

While I have absolutely no problem what so ever in being required to show proof of ID-in fact- there is absolutely no reason why any person living in America legally should not have proper identification....it seems asinine to me that these requirements are not straight across the board for everyone.

  2. OCM, i think she and her husband do have or had *international * driver licenses ? i am not sure- i know when i lived abroad , i had an international DL, tho’ where i was at, it was so frightening to drive, i seldom did...when i returned to the U.S. i pulled it out to write a check as ID for a purchase with check payment, and the cashier balked at it, saying she had never seen one, thus could not accept it....imagine my happiness...so, i went the next day and got a U.S.local issue one, updated and re-issued.

  3. E-Doll, it seems that more and more we’re having to jump through these silly ID hoops; yet things like Sept. 11th and the like just keep happening in spite of it all. What a waste!
