  1. In the winter months they use the crawl space of my shop/office as a Den and every spring I here the patter of little feet. And also the sound of teeth as Mom uses the foundation as den padding.

  2. the worst is when it’s mating season. Raccoons in heat will scare you blind with the noises they make. Banshees and Hell Demons are nothing compared to them.

  3. So tell us.  Did the cute thing get out okay or end up in a stew.
And did you get your board back?
Did it end with you having to call animal control folks?

  4. When I was a kid - we accidentally (and I do mean accidentally) killed a raccoon - poisoned her - had rats in the barn as big as dogs (I kid you not, the pest control guy ran screaming like a little girl when he saw one) - so we had to bait trap the entire barn - she had her home base set up in the huge garage - which we never used. I wanted to put her into our deep freezer (not the kitchen freezer) until raccoon season - even at a young age I had vast knowledge of taxidermy and the importance of specific hunting seasons - but my mom wouldn’t allow it - would have been a primo mount - no injury. Still have to wonder about all the deer and antlers (who in the family got them) since my Dad was a hunter until he killed Bambi’s mother and stumbled upon Bambi while collecting his kill - which we then raised until fall. I know my brother got the black bear rug. We (here and now) set the raccoons we catch free as they have all been juveniles - and thus far have not been much trouble - certainly not compared to the stupid groundhogs. This year is such a garden disaster (no fruit what-so-ever, weeds everywhere) that we don’t even see much - the bunnies are about it.

  5. He got out when he was ready and my board is fine. Poor little guy.

Having grown up going camping all the time, raccoons are not the kind of critter I’m afraid of. Give them their space and they’re fine, but don’t fool yourself thinking they’re for petting and snuggling.

  6. Back again - cute I didn’t get the reference in the post title until just now! Good One.

  7. I’m subtle that way. Most go unnoticed.
