Remind me to never do that again!

I’m actually a little impressed with myself. Everything I know about computers is courtesy of my library card. And I managed to dig out of this without panicking and hauling it to some computer repair shop.

Hey! Nobody else is patting me on the back! Gotta do it myself.

  1. If you use so many power PC applications that you are effectively shut down, and failed at recovering your previous state through uninstalls etc, and can now only function by keeping a “dual” system, then (I ask ever so gently)…

Why Mac????????????????????? Why, if all it was doing (that mattered) was emulating Windows?

Of course you did have the privilege of paying more for that emulation. I forgot.

*sound of very old can of worms creaking open, and sputtering of the old Mac/PC argument engine firing up its 2.4 cylinders of been-there awesome*

Sorry - I couldn’t help it. I think my grandmother on my sisters side mated with a troll. Its in me blood…

  2. Actually ooGooGaiPan ooGcM(blah) I wasn’t effectively shut down. I could have operated without my favorite stuff, I didn’t want to, and don’t have to. And since I’m between jobs, I’m certainly not going to spend the mucho bucks to buy other software. Shelling out $29 for Lion was enough. I’m living on savings and have to be spartan in my expenditures.

Which will be a post for another day… ‘My experiences with my doctor and dentist while not having health insurance.’

Think of it as a cost-saving measure, ooGc(what? You use one of your passwords as you name?)

  3. Hey Christopher ... It’s past 2am here and I’m usually long gone by now.  But had tons of puter junk and photos and ... and .... just couldn’t stop what I was doing. Now I have a ripping headache and thought okay, time to go but first, check BMEWS.

OK .... you’re both way ahead of me on computer stuff, I really need to close, but I just have to ask. First.  You have a Mac. Right?  What exactly were you doing when things went wrong?  I re-read your post but can’t figure it out.  Were you running too much at once?
And how does Mac differ from my Dell?  I have no experience at all with Macs. But the way I hear ppl talk about them, I’m thinking of making my next one an Apple.  I imagine it might take some getting used to and relearning things. Is that correct?

I’ve been working backing up docs and photos to Google, but haven’t done anything yet about a proper back up, so your experience kinda has me worried that I’ve been lax and maybe need to get on track with back ups. I think I’ve been lucky so far, I don’t have some of the problem I read about or hear ppl talk about.  But then I don’t have heavy duty photo editing or video stuff.

OK, gotta go. Been at this desk all day.
    Cheers

  4. I’d have to say that the basic difference between a Mac and a Dell is this: Mac software is written specifically to work with Mac hardware. Dell is hardware, it may or may not be compatible with Windows software. Nobody writes software to work specifically with Dell hardware.

Note that my problem was not in the upgrade itself. My problem is that they didn’t warn me that they were dropping Power PC support…or maybe they did, and I just didn’t realize how much of my favorite stuff was Power PC. Could have fixed it quicker if I was employed and willing to spend more money buying different software.

I’m not way ahead of you. Everything I know is courtesy of my library card. I’m sure you’ve got one? Don’t you?

As for running too much, that would just slow my Mac down. It’s happened. I usually just open up a book in Pages and read while my Mac deals with the load. That’s what computers are for. Or I can watch a video on DVD while the Mac deals with the load.

  5. OK .... you’re both way ahead of me on computer stuff, I really need to close, but I just have to ask. First.  You have a Mac. Right?  What exactly were you doing when things went wrong?

I find I didn’t answer the question. When Things Went Wrong. (didn’t Mel Brooks have a TV show like that? When Things Were Rotten?)

I’d upgraded to Lion. Then I found that when I’d call up a favorite program I’d get a message like:

Power PC programs are not supported under OSX 7

Don’t hold me to the actual quote.

Things didn’t actually go wrong, it’s just that I didn’t understand what ‘no longer support Power PC’ meant.

Well, if I were employed, I wouldn’t have bothered with this solution. I’d have just found and bought new software. But I’m not employed. This works until I am either employed, or my book sells.

I wonder, if faced with the same situation, would oogoogaipan have been able to dig himself out without resorting to some computer store? And oogoowhatever,

Why, if all it was doing (that mattered) was emulating Windows?

The point is that Windows emulates Mac. I’ve one word for you: Vista.

  6. I didn’t mean for this to end up being a “harass Christopher about his Mac” thread. Everybody tell Chris what fine job he’s doing!

    Minor correction to above:

A Mac is a piece of hardware and firmware built by Apple to run the Mac OS and Mac software. A Dell is a piece of hardware and firmware built by Dell to run Windows (and other OS’s like Linux)and Windows software. Mac’s can’t run Windows applications software without a special piece of Mac software installed that pretends to be the Windows OS and enables Windows applications to work in that piece of hardware. The reason for its existence is because there are a huge number of applications in Windows that are not available (for one reason or another) in Mac, and Mac-folks want/like those apps but are unwilling to buy a Windows compatible machine.

...and, yes, I have swapped or upgraded (Windows)operating systems (what Chris was doing with Mac OS when things went tharn). I’ve never known anyone with a Mac emulator (to run Mac apps). I’m not even sure one exists. What Mac application is out there that’s so great - and isn’t available in Windows?

  7. I haven’t switched to Lion either. I’ve got MANY Power PC apps that I can’t do without and I sure can’t afford to buy them again. No upgrade options for many of them most notably Any Adobe programs. My Photoshop CS 3 is still working fine and for what I do it’s perfect. Lion is a great Op/Sys. But until I can use everything I have I won’t be switching. I’ll be concentrating on upgrading those programs for a while…
    Good luck man.

  8. Good plan Bushwack, learn from us stupid idiots. I think I did a decent job of doing both at once, sort of.
