  1. I was 13. At my age, remembering to put socks on before going to work is a chore!

  2. I, too was 8 years old at the time.

    A bit of synchronicity here, on another blog, we were discussing the prices of goods in 1965.

    2005 Dollarettes just don’t go very far anymore…

  3. Let’s look at inflation… (This is based on the inflation calculator at http://www1.jsc.nasa.gov/bu2/inflateCPI.html

    1) Groceries at $20/week ---> $134/week
    .....It appears that this has gotten more expensive
    2) New car at $5,000 ---> $33,610
    .....It appears that cars are cheaper now
    3) Cigarettes at $0.25/pack ---> $1.68/pack
    .....Once you include the tobacco tax, cigs are cheaper now
    4) dime to mail a letter ---> 67 cents
    .....We are getting a real bargain now
    6) Gas at 29 cents/gallon ---> $1.95 per gallon
    .....Once you include the gasoline taxes (about 50 cents/gallon in maryland), gasoline is cheaper now!
    17) $15 hotel room ---> $101.83 now
    .....Seems like I can book a room for less than $80 in most any city
    18) $35/day in the hospital ---> $235/day
    .....Hospital stays are more expensive now, but, also more likely to save you life.

    Everyone likes to complain about inflation, but, my personal view is that increase in prices is a short term problem, offset by increases in wages. As long as inflation is moderate (let’s say between 2% and 4%), then there will be reasonable increases in prices, and wages will catch up in a reasonable time.

  5. Carguy-
    In ‘57 my mother was 13 and my dad was 15.
    Dac-your dad was born the same year as MY HUSBAND!
    Here I was all ready to laugh at the geezers-being born in late ‘70 myself-and now I feel geezerish too.

    Thank ALOT Dac. rasberry

  6. In 1957 I was 13 years old............About to finish grade school (Catholic) and go high school (private Catholic)..........In order to go to this private Catholic high school I had to earn the money for it - tuition then was $100/year........My mother found me a job as a live-in baby-sitter for a rich summer family in our summer resort beach area........I lived with this family & had total care of a rotten spoiled child with only one day off a week.........I hated every day of it.............The next summer my mother found me a job as a live-in upstairs maid with another rich summer family.........I cleaned their upstairs bedrooms & bathrooms & lived in an attic bedroom........I also had to babysit the grandchildren on the weekends when they came to visit - again I hated it but had to earn the money to keep going to the private high school..............The 3rd & 4th summer years of high school I worked as a cleaning girl in a summer resort hotel - a very exclusive rich person’s hotel...........again hated every minute of it.........The only advantage of all of this drudgery of the summer work was that I had a good Catholic education (I think)..............During all these summer jobs, if I remember correctly, I probaly only earned $15 to $20 per week............I hated my mother then & God rest her soul, I am sorry to say I still can’t forgive her for the agony she put me through during my formative years..............Now that I think of it the only positive thing that came out of those trying years is a positive work ethic since then - I now would have to be practically dead to call in sick or take a day off for no reason.............I have been working since I was 13 years old & am so looking forward to retiring!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. 19. It was 14 cent for the movies.  My dad used to give me a quarter a week allowance
    I’d go to the show and eat all the popcorn and candy I could eat and come home
    with change.  Skipper those were the days my friend.

  8. Twerp, I was born mid-70’s myself, but I don’t feel terribly old yet. Maybe next year, when I hit 30…

    Skipper, I have noticed over the last week or so that if I click on the Comments link from the main page, it just reloads the main page. To get to the comments, I have to click on the category of the post, then click the Comments link from there.

  9. Ah, perhaps I was unclear.

    Assume cigarettes are $1.68 per pack. Add in 80 cent per pack taxes, and we are paying $2.40 per pack.

    Here in Northren Virginia, a carton of Pall Mall is $21.46 (including sales tax), which is $2.14 per pack.

    therefore, cigarettes, except for specific tobaco taxes, are cheaper nowadays.

  10. My last stay at a hospital cost the insurance company $1000 per day, for a full week, in early 2001. Knee surgery to re-attach the quadriceps tendon to the kneecap was $1500, the spinal tap anaesthesia (I KNOW I spelled that wrongly) and some IV “joy juice”, another $1500, for an operation that lasted about an hour.

    I’d fathom a guess that a triple bypass or heart valve job costs just a tad more....
