  1. When I look at the rest of the world, I cannot see myself living as comfortably anywhere else.  I long ago realized how many ways the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution made my life and the lives of the people around me better.

It’s not just the specifics in the Bill of Rights, it’s how the stage is set for the greatest possible freedom of action by individuals.  Part of American mythology is the idea of the American as individualist, as a pioneer.  It’s true that not all of us are of that caliber.  A lot of us are though and all of us have the American dream of a nearly unlimited future.  It’s an outlook on life that made us the dominant super power on the planet.  It made us rich and powerful with a comfortable and safe standard of living.

It really scares me that an American Supreme Court Justice doesn’t seem to grasp that.  Without it, how could they possibly understand the laws they rule on?

  2. ‘We the People’ Loses Appeal With People Around the World

Well there’s your problem in a nutshell - Who gives a damn what the rest of the World thinks, does or what appeals to them?

What the NYslimes is ignoring is how controlled, taxed and in moral and financial poverty the World really lives in.

I saw it the two times I lived in Germany - and that is the gem of Europe (still functioning and moderately financially in the black). They TAX their rooms in their homes - which is why most homes consist of three apartments and there are no closets at all. Everyone squeals about their ‘free’ healthcare but they are taxed coming and going and another time just for grins (Munchen area had a total tax (counting local and city taxes) around 75% in the 80s - or it might have been Nurnberg). Everything, even that which is nailed down is taxed. Watching the East Germans cross the border (we left just as the ‘wall’ fell) - to see them snatch up bread and butter and eggs - things they used to have to stand in queue for. Forget that jeans and ball point pens were considered impossible to own. My son has lived in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan - he can’t believe how 3rd world these people live - he says it is modern and semi-great in the big cities and horrid outside. The SA Kingdom (i.e. the royal family) lives high on the hog while everyone else struggles.

I don’t want that for America - I want the success and failure to be solely on the individual and to stop this out-of-control government growth. Not the haves (being those in control) and the have nots (everyone else). As we know and have seen - that usually means the have nots can be slaughtered on a whim.

BTW, Heritage Foundation will give you a pocket copy of the Constitution for free and your ‘representative’ in Congress should also - and will send larger quantities for scout etc groups.

  3. Forgot - I decorate in Red, White & Blue Americana - I tell people it was a 4th of July 2003 (son was in Iraq) and we were at Ft Hood - gone wild. My guest bedroom is decorated in that motive completely - and there is a framed Constitution on the wall.

  4. Twice in my life I’ve taken an oath ‘to defend the Consitution from all enemies, foreign or domestic.’ I took that oath when I enlisted in the Navy in 1980, I took it again when the Postal Service offered me a career position in 1989.

Despite the fact that the Navy gave me an Honorable discharge in 1986, and the fact that I quit the Postal Service for personal reasons in 2011, my oath still stands. I’m older, and a better shot–even with bifocals.

Note: I did NOT claim to be wiser…

But I stand by my oath: I will defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign or Democrat domestic!

  5. I’ve never taken the oath but I stand by it just the same. Any American worth a shit would happy and proud to stand with you Chris.

  6. Thank you grayjohn. Let’s hope we never do have to stand together in that way.

If it ever gets to that point, I’m picturing King Harold at Hastings, Gen. Custer at the Little Big Horn, or Augustus crying ‘Give me back my legions!’

On the other hand, it could end up like the armies of Gondor and Rohan before the gates of Mordor. Some small, insignificant Halfling American might save the day.
