  1. The main reason you don’t hear about Yemen doing said things is because by and large they don’t. Expect those eight pirates sentenced to jail time to go through the same “rehabilitation” farce that the Cole plotters and most others did and to be released within next year.

The executions of the Somali pirates had more to do with the fact that they are Somali rather than because they are pirates (you would not BELIEVE how xenophobic and racist politics on the Arabian Peninsula can be: they practically make the Palestinians and even the USSR look positively inclusive).

  2. That is a funny thing about Arabs Turtler. They pretty much dislike anyone not of the penninsula and consider most all fair game for death, mistreatment, slavery etc. Kind of an age old tradition on the arabian side of the water.
So, is this gonna be the Barking-Pirates Early Warning System then Drew?
Oh Wait, already kinda is, Which is good, I like Pirate stories,,AARRGG !!

  4. Rich, I consider piracy to be a terrible thing that most of the “civilized” world is ignoring, probably for “racist” reasons. Dollars to donuts, if the Norwegians were hijacking ships in the Baltic, it would be on the news 24-7. So I do tend to cover these stories more than most other places.

Just like the “war on terror”, which Somali piracy could be an indirect part of, the “cure” is easily within the grasp of the West, yet they refuse to drop the big hammer on this bunch of cockroaches. That’s the part that really chaps my bottom, so I bring these stories to people’s attention. Sooner or later, something will have to be done.

When the United States was first formed, nearly 4% of our GNP was spent on tribute to pay off the Barbary pirates. Thomas Jefferson had his fill of that, and sent in the Marines. A few small military actions later and the Barbary Wars were over, and there has been no piracy there for more than 10 generations. What worked then will work now; the only thing missing is the will to solve the problem.
