POINTS OF VIEW ……. A discussion, not an argument.

I find this an interesting discussion, or debate. Call it what you will but please understand this is not an argument.

  1. Peiper I don’t know if you caught the story recently were a muslim is suing Tesco because they “forced” him to handle alcohol. He was as I understand it moving crates of beer with a fork lift. He claimed no one told him he would be handling alcohol. apparently he was unaware they sold the stuff. Now to me this is pure horseshit. Same as the Pharmacist. If he can’t do the job he’s paid for then bugger off.

  2. OTOH, a retailer has the right to carry the products that he wants to, and not carry products that he doesn’t want to. How like unto retail is a pharmacy? Or are they required by law to stock medicine X, Y, and Z?

If they have the right to choose their products, then the better response to the woman would be “Sorry, we don’t carry that. Try Schmelby’s down the road.”

If they don’t have the right, and must carry certain items, then their refusal to dispense them should be immediate grounds for losing their license. Period. Do, or Do Not. There is no “islam forbids me from selling you this” nonsense. Religion has no place in it. You have the training and the license, and you’re making a lot of money for what has to be the easiest work on the planet. Shut your pie hole and do your job.

For those folks whose religion does rule their life, they should always ask if the job they’re applying for will require them to handle “forbidden” items. If it does, then either go find another job or get over yourself. Once you’ve signed up you have no right to complain.

  3. For me, that’s the bottom line. You can say all you like that “________ a mile down the road sells it,” but the fact is that this or that employee was hired with the understanding that they would DO THE JOB. And it’s blatantly obvious to anyone with an attention span longer than that of a concussed duckling that if the employee is fired for refusing to serve the customers, suddenly the employer is subject to a lawsuit for religious discrimination.
So no, it’s not a case of forcing my religious views on a Muslim pharmacist or anyone else. It’s a case of someone getting a job and then deciding their religious principles trump BOTH the customer’s wishes AND the employer’s policy. In effect, the employee has the right to cripple his boss’s business at any time, and the employer can do nothing.
Yes, there are other stores where you can buy ________. There are other stores where you can work too, that don’t sell ________. If you object to selling _______, go apply for a job at one. But unless your employer *came to you* and asked that you work for him, YOU applied to HIM for employment. It is not your place to dictate to him the nature of the job YOU ASKED FOR THE CHANCE TO DO.
