I have no sympathy for these people. If you are going to plough £100,000 into a property the bare minimum you would do is make sure you have planning permission on board. What is happening here in my view is someone trying to circumvent the system. He must have made substantial changes to the property to bring about a cancellation of the original planning application. You may not like the planning officers decisions, but going against them is a potentially costly exercise as they have found out.
I did think there wasn’t something altogether right here. But what confused me I guess was that they are still willing to allow it’s use, but only by other people.
The way I read it first time thru, I was under the impression that something went wrong and had to be made right. In order to do that, he had to rebuild.
I may be wrong and these people have a legitimate beef but it looks to me that the building was probably “listed” which means any changes have to be approved by the planning officer. They probably pissed the bloke off by not consulting him first and he has had his revenge by enforcing the rules. Something is not quite right about the story.
No matter what we may think of our respective national governments, if you really want to see petty tyranny close-up, pay attention to the antics of your local school board and planning/zoning commission.
