In the children, we see what could be....if, that is, we could keep the adults over there from getting hold of them and twisting them.
News of all these projects and pictures of the results are heavily suppressed by the usual suspects. Most, if not all, are initiated privately by the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coasties themselves and depend on private donations from people at home. Chief Wiggles‘ project “Operation Give” comes immediately to mind. Sgt. Hook had “Operation Shoe Fly” to send shoes to Afghan kids, there are people getting medical books and journals to Iraqi doctors and countless other unnamed and unsung projects to help the people in these two countries.
I feel certain that the real dividends may take a while to be fully realized, but they often pay dividends immediately as when children have already pointed out IEDs to patroling soldiers. I recall reading about one little girl who stood in the road clutching her stuffed animal that she had been given a day or so before. When the patrol approached she would not move. They stopped and someone went to her to see why she was out there. She then pointed out and IED to the troops. I don’t recall which milblog I read that on, but I know I didn’t see it in any AP dispatch or the NYTimes or WaPost. I’m equally sure that I’ll never see anything like it from them.
