  1. 420 million light-years away is…

2,463,592,320,000,000,000,000 miles away from earth.  WTF!!! rasberry

How many other planets with life forms in the universe does that make?

  2. God only knows.  It might be better if we never do.  Something tells me that the more we discover about life on other planets, the less pleasant the news is going to be.

    wink

  3. God only knows, exactly.

Whenever I get into an arguement with an athiest (or non-religious) person at work, I just start talking astronomy.  I just ask them to explain the Cosmos.  All they ever can come up with is, “Uhhh, the Big Bang”. banghead

I’m not a devout religious person, but when you contemplate outer space and the complexities of it and the unfathomable vastness of it, I’m hard pressed not to get a spiritual feeling throughout my mind.  I think any intelligent person would feel the same way.  That’s precisely why I think athiests are morons.

  4. I’ve known a few such over the years, MD4, and they were a mixed bag of types from a mixed bag of backgrounds.

I drew enough of them out, however, to find that they had one thing in common.  They were the centers of their own universes, they wanted to do what was right in their own eyes, and everyone else (by God!) had better make allowance for that.  Their idea of God is typically an idea of someone who is trying to keep them from having a good time.

Like you, I tried the astronomy tack, and they either bugged out or went away.  The idea of some kind of order in the cosmos was not something they were psychologically equipped to handle, apparently.

    wink

  5. The thing that always astonishes me with such images is the numbers of galaxies in the background. Yet this is just one tiny image. It’s rather difficult to comprehend, think I better have a lie down in a darkened room.....

  6. Same here, Phobos.

Anyone can argue all day over what sort of personality a supreme being may or may not have, and what interest such a being might or might not take in us, and our feeble doings.
After all, on the scale of this galaxy alone, we are definitely small bills at best.

The idea of a divine being who is revealed through the infinite order of all that exists, however, is suggested by the existence of that order itself, and it is enough to convince me.

    wink

  7. And, astronomers are discovering that theres a lot more to the universe than the part that emits visible light. e.g. They can infer black holes by the behavior of the nearby visible matter.
