I think I’ve written about the Clifton Bridge before, or at least about Brunel. The bridge is a chain link suspension bridge; the vertical lines don’t hang off of a catenary cable, but instead they depend from a flat section chain of “dog bone” shaped iron plates stacked and pinned like a massive bicycle chain. The Phillipsburg Free Bridge near me uses this method too, although our local bridge is made of steel not iron.
I’m sure this bridge has at least another 2 150 year anniversaries coming to it. Wrought iron lasts forever with just a wee bit of care.
