  1. Photo. Thing of beauty.

    Just sayin’ ...

  2. I would still rather have a pump shotgun loaded with 00. Cheap as chips and you don’t need to be overly accurate to get the job done. However a lever action rifle should be in everyone’s gun cabinet.

  3. I can’t fault that approach Lyndon, but I’d want to get past that “you don’t have to aim much” stuff. At “across the bedroom” distances, the shot column spreads out to perhaps 1.5” in diameter, and it was .72” inside the gun. So you still have to point pretty well.

And a 20 gauge shorty pump gun won’t have much recoil at all.

Now go find a short pump gun that doesn’t look tactical or cruiser.

I think it can be done; we’re talking about Youth models, usually rebarreled. But get wood stocks; you want to make it look “peaceful” to the DA or the jury. The whole idea behind the medium length barreled lever rifle chambered for gentle pistol ammo (secretly hot rodded a bit by you) was to create an inexpensive, powerful, idiot proof repeater with borderline “high capacity” in a package as innocent looking as a Christmas puppy.

  4. My two cents says a double barreled 12ga with external hammers like the Rossi Overland is ideal.  With 20” barrels, it’s pretty quick and handy.

No springs under tension until you pull the hammers back.  It can sit under your bed in perfect safety for years.

  5. A good lever gun is the original assault rifle.  I got a fine example, in .44 mag.  I use a 20 gauge 870 for home defense since the wife and daughter can handle it when I am not home.

  6. FWIW, I tend to agree with Lyndon B. Except I’d use #4 or maybe #6 instead of 00. As for the “across the bedroom distances,” charge at the SOB and keep on pumping. If you don’t hit him you’ll scare him to death.

    YMMV.

  7. That’s good thinking Drew especially in areas where the gun grabbers are growing in numbers, but I think if I was lucky enough to reside somewhere that allowed you to defend yourself. I would go with StephanA’s suggestion and get it chambered in 44 mag or maybe .45-70 rather than .30-30 What would worry me a bit is by and large US houses tend to be timber construction so the bullet could easily over penetrate.

  8. Lyndon, over penetration is a valid concern. Buckshot will also over penetrate. And this is why, my suggestion is for a fat caliber, soft lead bullets with big meplats at velocities just over supersonic. They will mushroom - flatten out - almost instantly on contact. Which means nearly complete energy transfer, and a large wounding channel. Nothing is foolproof or guaranteed, but in general soft lead bullets won’t penetrate as much as modern copper jacketed ones. Hard cast lead, OTOH, will not expand a bit, and dig a hole halfway to China.

Hornady makes a swaged lead 255 grain .454” RNFP bullet. It is pressure formed, not cast, so it is made from pure lead. At high chamber pressure or high velocity it will smear the inside of your barrel with lead, so what you do is to coat the bullet with Lee’s Liquid Alox lubricant, and then work up a .45 Colt 1350fps load using slower powders. You’ve got a rifle barrel to work with, instead of the typical 5” pistol barrel. The Alox lube will keep the bullet from leading your barrel, and the velocity will turn the bullet into a 1” diameter disk as soon as it contacts a soft target.

It’s a great idea ... pity you can’t find brass cases anywhere. Still. Damn, I’m getting tired of the never-ending ammo shortage. Ever since friggin’ Obama got elected!!!
