  2. Read once about the Salvadoran war against the Farabundi rebels. Seems the acceptable story is that American Special Forces trained the Salvadoran government troops how to mass murder, rape, maim, pillage and generally do a Genghis Khan number on poor defenseless innocent civilians.

Turns out that the real story is that SF trained the Salvadorans to fight well and to do things like negotiations, civilian protection, etc. But, the Salvadorans, of course, knew all the nasty stuff already and practiced it often.

But, when it came time for the rebels to meet with the government troops for cease fires, weapons turn-overs, surrenders, and the like, the REBELS insisted the American Special Forces soldiers be at all the meetings to protect THEM from the government troops. Seems the FMLN guys knew the Americans had no long term agenda to kill and destroy them, so they trusted the Americans, who did not let them down. Both sides knew the Americans were honest brokers.

El Salvador is no paradise, but it is at peace and is stable, for a Central American nation. Wonder to whom the credit will never go for that?
