I was just about to email you about this! Synchronicity. The Vanguard is a ssbn as well. The Times has a slightly different take on this.

So what are the odds of this? I think there is more to come on this story. I note that MI5 recently gave out a story about the UK having spies from our so called European allies (Germany and France) actively operating in Britain. My suspicion is the French were trying to sneak up on Vanguard or vice versa and they miscalculated.
Sneaking Up is one of the games submariners play. Hiding But Good is the other. Played well, it’s merely Very Dangerous. Played a little too well and it’s either embarrassing or nearly fatal.
To a sub, everything is a target. Everything.
Ok, I read the article you linked. What BS. “Oh was that a sub? We thought we’d bumped a shipping container someone had dropped.” Which implies that the sub was operating within a few feet of the bottom of the ocean. Even on the Mid - Atlantic Ridge, that’s still pretty deep. Anybody have a link to a good online hi-res topo map of the MAR?
Wasn’t it Patton that said “I’d rather have a German division in front of me than a French sub behind”?
Well at least we wont have that issue for 4 years as The “ONE” Im sure will have Cow Bells placed on all our subs so everyone will know where they are all the time. If course thats after he orders all Nukes removed and destroyed in the name of PEACE!
BTW,Do you guys think Im being a bit too snarky lately? NAAAAAAAAAA,,
Sounds like (no pun intended) they’re getting too good at what they do.
On the other hand, locating another sub by running into them is probably counter-productive at some level.
On a lighter note, this reminds me of a story my late father once told me. He grew up in western Kansas. Born in 1909, he lived in the Great Plains most of his formative years. In those days, trees were not common in that part of the United States. A certain man, a successful farmer, bought one of the first Model T Fords in the area and took delivery in Dodge City, Kansas. He celebrated his acquisition with some recreational beverages and then drove west to his farm on the plains. In the process, he managed to drive into the only tree between Dodge City and his farm.
Even being quiet and sneaky, what are the odds two submarines would bump into each other in the North Atlantic? Should either commander buy a lottery ticket?
As for all the anti-nuclear protesters demanding an explanation - get a life.
