  1. I’m gonna look foolish here but keep in mind, I am even less then knowledgeable on the subject with regard to ammo and things related.

    Drew, you said ..

.38s or .357s. They are both the same “caliber”.

Wait a minute. This looks like who’s on first.
A .38 and a .357 are the same caliber? I was given to believe one was more powerful. I am I admit, mixed up.  Please unmix.  Will check back tomorrow.

    same caliber???

  2. Peiper - (McGoo dares to step onto Drew’s gun turf!) the caliber refers to the physical diameter of the bullet - which is actually identical for the .38 and .357 round.

The casing (the brass thingy left over after firing smile ) is a bit longer for the .357 magnum round so they can pack more powder into it for higher power (and so you can’t shove it into a .38 weapon - too long! - by mistake and overload it!)

  3. Drew - you were right then and you’re right now. A home defense weapon is not a kitchen fire extinguisher - where one size fits all.

I has to fit the needs and capabilities (and limitations!) of the occupant or occupants. I’d give good odds the lady in question wasn’t a stranger to the weapon that did the deed.

  4. Nice story and we have the Castle Doctrine here - So no worries if (and that’s a big if) I need to do something similar here.

  5. How many of you remember Kim DuToit’s Dead Goblin Count? I miss seeing those! cool smile

  6. Macker, yeah. Count me as missing those. Altho, perhaps unfortunately there aren’t many of those. Or not enough to please.

Steamboat ... Much thanks for the caliber thing. I hadn’t a clue. I think I have a lot of reading to do. Of course, over here, readings all ya can do on that subject.

  7. Thanks for helping Steamboat. I emailed him a giant essay on the topic, going all the way back to black powder revolvers during the transition period. So now we can consider Peiper to be

    a) a junior gun expert in his own right,

    or

    b) even more confused than he was before.

Maybe I shouldn’t have started my essay by telling him that they were both 9mm??

For an encore, maybe next week I’ll do Brinell Hardness, meplats, and paper jackets vs gas checks! Because I had this interesting idea ... .38 Special cases loaded to .357 Magnum pressures, fired in .357 Magnum house guns, loaded with paper patched and lubed DEWC (not HBWC!!) soft lead bullets. BHN 10 or less. 1100-1300fps velocity, no leading, wall to wall meplat and soft lead. Ought to mushroom out to about a full inch, not over-penetrate, no worries about a HP getting jammed up on clothing, and when the cops come what they find in the gun is light duty target ammo. Gosh officer, I must have accidentally put in 5gr Bullseye instead of 2.5. The infamous “double charge”! Sorry the bad guy is blown into shreds and smeared all over the walls.

Anyone out there have a .350 base press sizing die they’d like to sell? I can use either 7/8-14 threads or Lubrimatic inserts.

  8. I knew this story would make the Drewmeister happy when I first saw if over at Insty of all places.

  9. No charges have been files against Mrs. Franklin…

Probably won’t be, but look out for ‘wrongful death’ civil suits from the family. An acquaintance at church went through that. He owns a small jewelry store and had killed two robbers within a year. The family of one of them brought a civil suit for wrongful death. They lost, but he had to pay to defend against it.

It should have been thrown out of court to begin with. The perp was killed in commission of a crime. He was armed.
