One Hell of a Rumor

  1. The Iranians we know for a fact are enriching uranium. I am no expert but the percentage of U235 (what they need for their bombs) to U238 is pretty low, hence the need to enrich the uranium. Now that means they have a lot of waste material. Assuming they aren’t converting it to plutonium. What to do with it? Well there must be plenty of places they could dump it in Iran, but what better way to dispose of it than to dump it on the Israelis? Maybe it is a crock, but with the Iranian track record I wouldn’t rule it out. When I first read the story I did wonder just what kind of cargo it was. Since they were Somalis who were toasted I wasn’t too worried as there are plenty more where they came from, but this is quite sinister. Mind you I doubt that ship will get much further if it really is carrying nuclear waste without succumbing to an unfortunate accident!

  2. Indeed. wink

  3. Just one little question here guys.  Where does depleted uranium come from?  The stuff that we pack our Abrams tanks with that doesn’t hurt our soldiers.

    The stuff in Somalia killed in a couple of days.  Whatever is on that ship is a lot nastier than leftover uranium from bomb making.  I’m ready to believe a lot of possibilities, just not that one.

    The descriptions sure sound like radiation poisoning.  The next question is who has that much highly radioactive material and why were they willing to pack it all aboard a ship?  An Iranian attack on Israel idea is as good as any.  However, that would mean that the Iranians had given up on actually making an atom bomb and were producing dirty bombs instead.  Think of the quantity of material required to fill the ship and think how many nuclear weapons that could make at about 10 kilos per bomb.

    There are a lot of things that don’t add up here.

  4. Second Thought;

    With that much highly radioactive material, supposedly from China, why didn’t the Iranians go for something other than a dirty bomb?

    My understanding has always been that a sufficient quantity of any highly radioactive material was capable of achieving the critical mass for a nuclear reaction and therefore for a nuclear detonation.

    Wassup wit dat?

    Half of this makes sense and half of it doesn’t.  Is anyone going to be watching when the final answers come out?
