  1. Although Reagan, Thatcher and JPII forced the USSR into the dust bin of history, it was also due to Gorby’s foresightedness. Never would have been possible under a Breshnev, much less a Stalin. He and Lech Wałęsa deserve a place in the pantheon responsible for the fall of the true Evil Empire.

The saddest thing is that if we’d made an effort to help Gorby maintain a law and order transition to freedom (instead of handing Russia over to that drunken buffoon Yeltsin and his mafioso cronies) we could have helped them to build a decent democratic country that would have been as close an ally to us as Japan is now.

    This mistake can be laid at the door of 3 people: Bush I, Cliton, and Rush Limbaugh. We were too eager to celebrate victory (and declare peace so as to gut the military) and not focused enough on the future.
