  1. Does the camera have a white balance adjustment procedure? (I am assuming this is an electronic camera and not film) If so, do the procedure after power up and after drastic lighting changes.

  2. I was shooting in auto. Camera is a 3px Kodak DX6340. I don’t know if it has that adjustment.  What would I look for re. that adjustment? The funny thing is, this pix is the only one of the group shot at the same place, that came out that way. All the others are fine.
And btw ... much thanks for the reply.

  3. Looks like a failing CCD to me. Keep taking pictures, and if it gets worse and worse, and then one day all you get is purple smears instead of a picture, then I’m right. Until then ...

Yes, it is the white balance being off. Take a white postcard with you and set the white balance for each new shooting area. In other words, reset the white whenever the light changes significantly. Outdoors bright, outdoors shade, indoors incandescent light, indoors fluorescent light, etc.

Once the CCD is mostly dead, try getting it repaired. You’ll likely find out that the repair costs more than a new and better camera. This happened to me with a Canon, but it can happen with any brand. I’ve heard condensation blamed for it too, though my camera was never exposed to much of any wetness.

  4. I was going to post the stuff below earlier but circumstances beyond my control prevented it.

So, a little late to the game, I’ll do it anyway but preface it with concurring with Drew.  Your CCD is shot.  It happened on my Sony DSCF717 but Sony had a recall on them and fixed it for free.  Check Kodak’s site.  Better yet, write them.  That’s what I did.

    OK, here goes:

Try this first: pull the battery from the camera.  For shits and giggles I’d leave the camera w/o battery for a day.  Put the battery back in and if it prompts you to re-enter time/date info, you’re pretty much certain it automatically reverted to factory settings by itself.

If that didn’t work, assuming you still have your owner’s manual, look to see if there is a way to force the camera into “default” or “factory settings” mode. If not, you will need to go through all your options and settings manually and change them back.  Like the commenters previous, one of these settings appear changed.  Could be white balance or it could be one of those “artsy-fartsy” settings cameras have for taking pictures.  Like B/W; sepia; infra-red; inverted, etc.

Once that is done and the camera STILL takes pictures like these then I believe your CCD sensor is shot.  Nothing you can do about it that I am aware of.  Buy a new camera. They’re cheap enough now.  Just saw a Canon (if I recall) 10 MegaPixel with 3x zoom for $49. Yep, $49.

If you are willing to spend about $250 there are tons of great cameras out there with 15x zoom, fast power-ups, etc.

  5. OK and thanks all. ah ... CCD?  That isn’t Russian is it?

As mentioned before ... it’s been that way for a very long time but does not happen every time. How does one shot out of several work like this. Surely all of them should have been snafu. No? Been looking for an excuse to buy new anyway.
Yikes, Cannon for $49?  No viewfinder I bet.

OK guys .... I know I’m talking to tech savvy ppl here so I’ll embarrass myself by asking something else.

What the heck is Blackberry?  That’s all I’ve been hearing lately. Blackberry used to grow on bushes down the road from us and we’d pick em at will. Now it’s something tech.
    Is that a cell phone?

  6. Google/Bing is your friend:  http://us.blackberry.com/

Fancy phone that comes with lots of features to include being able to get on the internet.

Just click on one of the phones at the link and you’ll see what it can do......very the wonderfully cheap price of about $100 per month (plus cost of phone.)

    CNET reviews them here: http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphone-reviews/

  8. I sent you a corrected image by email. Check the DREW458 account to see it and what I found to be the problem.

  9. Chris .... Now that is funny. Thanks for the reminder that there are still clever comics in the world. I forgot about Ronnie Corbett. Or whoever write the material. And I think he does. Doesn’t he?

ASM, Thank you. Look forward to it as soon as it hits my inbox. I can’t be sure but, if you click on peiper you should be able to email me instead of Drew. I think.

  10. Okay, not sure I see a problem. The colors aren’t right? Is that it? It’s a pretty picture as is.

Can’t help otherwise. My only serious photography experience was in the mid-90s when my wife and I took a B&W photography course. A film course. (remember film?) Had to develop it, print it, and then ‘edit’ it. I think it was called ‘dodging’ and ‘burning’. Lots of fun. Oh, I forgot, had to shoot it!

Sad part was that some young ‘studs’ (nerds) got hold of my negatives. Next thing I knew, my wife was surrounded by young ‘studs’ (nerds) trying to do ‘photo shoots’ of her. Nude, of course. Can’t really blame them. She was nude on my negatives. I filed a protest with the college and so far, no such photos of my wife have surfaced. The ‘nerds’ in question were severely admonished. One was expelled…seems he’d done that a couple of times before.

Just a suggestion, try converting it to a B&W. I’ve found that many color photos can be saved by converting to B&W. B&W was good enough for Ansel Adams. Indeed, my favorite shot my wife did was a B&W of a trail in John Bryant State Park. I still use it for wallpaper. Especially at Halloween. It’s a creepy trail, in B&W. In color it is so ordinary…
