To be towed past a war zone to a place where your possible enemy’s possible ally waits to cut the ship to shreds. They should have renamed her HMS Ignominious for this trip.
Last time I checked, nobody but the USA has carriers. The Brits and French have VTOL carriers. Cheaper, but as Maggie Thatcher discovered in the Falkland war, VTOL ‘carriers’ just can’t do the job of a regular carrier.
Chris I hate to disagree with you but I seem to recall Britain did retake the Falklands even with what are essentially through deck cruisers. No doubt a proper carrier would have been better but the socialists had (as they always do) bankrupted Britain in the previous decade and there was no money for conventional aircraft carriers. Also I am pretty sure that the Chuck DeGaulle is a conventional albeit nuclear powered carrier. It carries mainly French aircraft, none of which are VTOL.
Yes. The Brits did retake the Falklands. But it cost them far more than it should have. I also thought the French retired the DeGaul, and therefore have no carriers. I’m obviously out of date on this stuff. I need to consult Jane’s Warships of the world.
But LyndonB, I’m happy to be wrong about this. It means our allies are more powerful than I thought. A very good thing, considering the Partier-In-Chief who currently inhabits the White House.
I think its nice of the frogs and limeys to share their toys once in awhile. Make it seem all BFF and shit.
