  1. Just for fun, it would be interesting to turn the Mythbusters loose on this using a .50 caliber Barret (or similar) to see how big an arrow could be or how long-distance one could go....

  2. Take it a step past that and you could make your own spearchucker.

    There is an upper limit on how strong an initial pressure wave the hollow arrow can resist. Too much and the tip will just rip out from the shaft. Accelerating an arrow down a tube by means of a base plate, while centering sabots hold the shaft in alignment ... the sky’s your limit.

    My ideas on improving the design were to take the device up from the “almost a toy” category that it MIGHT be in, into the “effective 100 yard hunting weapon” category it SHOULD be in, and not much further. Certainly you could go further, but it would get really loud. These things are nearly silent, and I wouldn’t want to throw that aspect completely away. So I was looking for a balance point a little further. Can’t say if I found it until I build one, which I’m not going to do, so who knows.
