  1. Is Google owned by the French? The slurping noise sounded like it had a French accent.

  2. Its a good thing that I didn’t buy into Google stock because now I would feel really really dirty. barf

  3. Google!  When you make a deal with the devil, remember, the devil is always the senior partner!

    cool smirk

  4. Nothing to see here.

I’m glad they got their foot in the door.  It’s not like the choice for the Chinese is a ‘wide open search engine’ or ‘Filtered Google’.  The choice is Filtered Google, ‘Filtered-Peoples-Republic-of-China-search’ or ‘Filtered Mao-search’ or NOTHING.

In the long run, allowing the people to see even the filtered content will increase communication and unleash favorable forces which I think will lead to further freedoms.
Better to get market share and wait for internal forces to get the filters removed.

  5. FOC: naaahhh.. That amounts to “if I don’t do it someone else will”.

  6. Oink, I agree. Someone else definitely will.  If its not another private company, then it’ll be the Chinese government.  Why let someone else have that market?

The way I see it is that Google isn’t taking away anything they already had.  If anything, they’ll have better access to more information, and while the filtering is an abomination, there will be no way for the gov’t to mantain the filters forever.  The internal demand will overcome the Commie oppression.  Google is the ‘thin edge of the wedge’ and the people using the internet are the hammer.

  7. “When you make a deal with the devil, remember, the devil is always the senior partner!”

Unless of course, the setting is South Park....

  8. Someone else would sell the kids tainted drugs—with me they get pure stuff.
Someone else would get in the slave trade—I treat them humanely and deliver them alive to their new masters.

Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah Sounds like the ENRON management team.

Amazingly easy to justify anything that pays me well.

Do not assist or cooperate with scumbags who murder( remember Tiananmen Square?) or enslave. Show solidarity with the victims by not treating their oppressors as just one of the guys. Don’t let the oppressors think they’re just another valid opinion—invite them to kiss your ass.

    How hard is that?

  9. I understand your point but I’m just being pragmatic.

I don’t think Google is equivalent to the dope dealer because Google is not harming anyone, not even indirectly.

Where does the solidarity with the victims end?

If we aren’t going to deal with them, then we shouldn’t buy Chinese goods( Ever notice how the longshoremen unloading all those containers at Long Beach aren’t screaming bloody murder about the loss of their fellow union brother’s jobs. Hypocrites. ).

And we shouldn’t sell anything to them either: Cisco routers, or Motorola phones, or Microsoft operating systems, or GE medical imagine systems or Viagra or Hollywood movies or god knows what else.

In the long run, I think giving them access to information, even filtered info, and trading with them will lead to an enlightenment and political change for the better.  They need us more than we need them( I think ) and that gives us leverage.

    >How hard is that?
Have you ever tried shopping at WalMart or Home Depot or Sears or Lowes or Target or KMart or ToysRUs or CircuitCity or BestBuy?  Its almost impossible.  We NEED all that cheap Chinese crap.

I could be totally of base of course.

  10. To be 100% pure, we would have to leave the planet.
The evil act I’m discussing is fully cooperating in the very act of enslavement.

Ayn Rand was right: evil wants your cooperation in its denial of its lies, it wants your approval, and your respect.

    Do not give it!
