  1. Hey Rod, if I knew what your address was I’d send you a case of spray paint.

  2. Oh piss, no wait, oh crap - So what else is new - It’s all been done before -

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:10

I read the Book - in the end - Good, God and the Kingdom of Heaven is triumphant.

Let them have their petty, vile little tantrums - they will pay for it for eternity.

  3. Wardmom, what makes this worse is the old maplethorpe thing. It’s done in the name of, ART.

I’d like to see if they could convince muslims of that should they do the same to the koran.

  4. Any act that requires defacement or destruction is not a celebration.

And it sure as shootin’ ain’t art.

  5. Art for art’s sake; I’d like to do a Maplethorpe impression with a copy of the Koran. Bury that hellish imitiation of godliness where the sun don’t shine.

  6. I’m sorry, but this is just idiotic. Say what you will, but these fools are only doing what they feel is popular and against a target that will not shoot back.

Trust me, I’ve studied the old-school “Heathen Bastard Gods” of the later 19th and early 20th century- including such infamous blasphemers as Proudhoun, Marx, Engels, etc- and while you may hate their guts (god knows I do), you have to give the rats credit: they were absolutely fearless and committed to what they were doing, and they held very, very little as sacred, their reputations least of all. They would just as gleefully do this to the Bible as they would a Quran, or a Torah, or any other holy book they saw when they were in the mood, and let the consequences be dammed.

These idiots? Not so much. They may aspire to be like those old-school rats, but they hav neither the reckless bravery, nor the honesty, nor the fanaticism that drove the old gang. They will deface the Bible and claim to be “authentic” in their critic of “theocracy”, but you will NEVER see them deface the Quran, because THEIR sense of self-preservation outweighs whatever true dislike they may have.

Marx would probably have ripped them out in the most vulgar language you can imagine, and for once, he would’ve been right.

Any act that requires defacement or destruction is not a celebration.

Drew, while I understand your underlying point, I would have to say you are wrong.

    Dead wrong.

  7. Looks like there’s some pushback happening regarding the defaced bible.  This article also claims the purpose of the exhibit was to allow people to annotate the bible to add their own experiences, not specifically to encourage people to deface it.

If their intentions were good, then the people running the exhibit are naive and stupid.  Really, let’s encourage people to write in a book (ignore for the fact that it’s a holy book).  What did they THINK would happen?  Now add in the fact that it’s a holy book which many people have strong opinions about (both negative and positive).

Could they not see this coming a mile away?

My own thoughts:  Of course they could.  And they KNEW this would turn into a debacle, but some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of infamy.
