  1. So, where are the smut link?

  2. Mmmm… Redheads....

As to the Hatford thing, combination of factors.

I was a victim of a hit-and-run in 1984, in a DC ‘Burb.  He jumped the curb and nailed me on the sidewalk @ ~2:30 AM.  I was there an hour or so before an ambulance arrived—apparently he called one when he got home.

In the interim, an example of what The Greaseman used to call “The IPs” happened by.  I begged him to call me an ambulance.

    “Gimme $20 Dollahs”

    Unfortunately, he was serious.

    I did.

I guess I should be glad he didn’t rob me of the rest, but he didn’t ever call the ambulance.

This ain’t new.  People suck.  I *do* believe however that they suck more now than they did ~20 years ago.  Violence is so common and pervasive any more that nothing shocks people.  Most no longer have any fear of anything in this life or the next, so why bother going out of your way for someone else.  Add to this the fear of “getting involved” or “getting sued” and…

Think about it:  Imagine you’re an average inner-city young man with a bit of history, probably done some things that could get you in trouble, perhaps even have a warrant or two from something minor enough that they’re not actually HUNTING you, but will pick you up if they run your name or whatever.  You’re walking down the street and see something like this.

If you call, they may want to ask you questions, like your name.  They may even want to see ID.  You don’t want to get tied up in this.  Maybe all of the above is false, but you’ve got a date, or a haircut appointment, or whatever.

    Someone else will call, right?

    Apparently not.

    DD

PS:  You missed one thing:  The cop was on his way to another call, and just happened up the road.  He wasn’t coming for this, but had to stop to avoid the body in the road.

    RTFA.

    Still looking for the smut…

  4. That was the point I was gonna make, that we have specifically trained our citizenry NOT to render aid. If someone helps him, they are liable for his condition. We’ve all had this beaten into our heads by the news media and civil law. It’s as good as putting everything you’ve ever had or ever WILL have on the line to help someone anymore.

Granted, *I’d* have probably helped him, but then I have no car, no house, no bank account, no minor children. I have nothing to lose. If you’ve spent your entire adult life being shown in no uncertain terms that helping him is as good as kissing all that goodbye, volunteering your family for a life of poverty.... as much as it sucks, I can’t say as I blame anyone.

And then of course, you notice that the man hanging out with friends nearby, and the woman working nearby, who were “so disgusted” that no one helped him.... well, ya notice THEY didn’t help him either, huh?

What’s that old saying about motes and beams and your neighbors eye?

  5. Sure the PD response was quick. the car was on its way to ANOTHER crime and happened on the scene. That is why the chief was unsure if anyone called 9-1-1. Another report said that three bystanders called it in.

  8. a:  This hit-and-run thing just turns my guts at todays society. And lawyers. LAWYERS, ambulance chasers like, oh John Edwards perhaps? No-one CAN help but “Trained Professionals”. Otherwise, as GOF said, kiss the rest of any hope you had for a good life in the future goodbye. You read of it damn near every day. Therefore, you let him lay. But the least they could have done IS block traffic UNTIL the “TPs” showed.
b:  LOOOOOVE this new, ahem, addendum to the site!

  9. Insanity, pure and simple. Time to do as old Bill Shakespeare suggested, don’t you think?

  10. Cm, what was the line again? “Pushest thou against the fell button of reset”?

Posted by Drew458    United States   06/06/2008  at  07:18 PM

  11. It is a combination of factors but I do think that the Legal Lottery is the biggest problem to helping anyone these days. But it is not a new phenom - my dad died in ‘68 and as a MD would not stop - ‘I’d lose everything, if a single little thing went wrong’ he used to say. But he did stop at the first building and called for help (certainly pre-cell phone days). . .

So even back then, ‘trained professionals’ were as scared and liable as we all are now. Just another way to slam religion (do unto others) and enscounce trained helplessness (and gov dependancy) upon the citizens. And it appears to be working well.

Now Big Brother in the form of Obama The Movement will ascend to the rightful position of crowned glory and tell all of us ignorant and mean people exactly how to live our lives.

  12. Something to that effect, ahem. “First thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers” to be precise. Like your reset button quote though!
