  1. Personal opinion.

    Quit. Let it die.

Some folks can’t learn/appreciate what they have till it’s gone.

Set it free, and devote all that time to drinking, or doing something YOU like.

  2. It may be time for a [insert number of steps]-step program.

Limbaugh has been pushing a Two-Step program for a couple of weeks:

Step One: Drag McCain across the finish line

    Step Two: Deal with McCain.

Oh yeah, there is a Step Three: Rebuild the conservative movement.

Assuming that anything resembling free elections still exist in two years, it could be 1994 Redux. (sorry, a little elitist Latin lingo there...) Obama loses both Houses of Congress, a bona fide (oops, more elitist Latin lingo...) conservative emerges to lead the Republicans to victory in 2012.

I’m not gonna wait for a bona fide leader. The conservative movement is always a grassroots movement. We have to do it, all the while doing everything else that made this country great:

Go to work, or start a business.
Educate our children, at home if need be.
Worship God as we see fit.
    Provide for our families.

And always remember that God gave us Freedom. God gave us Freedom to worship Him. God gave us Freedom to reject Him. God gave us Freedom! And only God can take it away!

Certainly not some ‘tin-plated, over-bearing dictator with delusions of godhood’ like B. Hussein Obama.

If B. Hussein Obama wins tomorrow, don’t give up. We will rebuild the conservative movement. We will continue to fight.

I’m guilty of complacency. I always thought there would be a Reagan, or a Gingrich, to stand up for me. Instead, I got McCain, a man who is unarguably guilty of violating his oath of office. (I refer to McCain/Feingold)

I was wrong. Silly really. As one who defends the sovereignty of the individual, I was willing to lean on others. Rather ‘leftist’ isn’t it?

  3. "I fully understand why people got into duels back in the day.”

Yeah, that. One of the major reasons why I’ve been thought of as “half-crazy libertarian-bordering-on-anarchist radical” by those who have known me well is because I truly believe it was a bad thing when that was taken away, when we all became “safe”.
Yes, there was a lot of casual violence that shouldn’t have happened, and a lot of people died that shouldn’t have. But at the same time, there were a lot of people who died that SHOULD have too, and a lot of lessons learned by example so they didn’t have to be learned the hard way.
I really do believe that we lost something important when we lost the idea that impugning someone’s honor is something that puts your very life on the line. If it weren’t for that, anyone with as high a standard of personal honor as John McCain would never have even CONSIDERED something like McCain-Feingold. He’d rather take a bullet to the chest than have people say he violated his oath.

On the minus side, yes, I have been considered a “half-crazy libertarian-bordering-on-anarchist radical”. On the plus side, I have had someone quite literally hand me a stack of money, NOT HAVING EVEN COUNTED IT, and asked me, “Can you hang on to this? I’ve got too much to do, I can’t keep track of the cash tonight.” Knowing that lady blandly assumed that I would count it and would make 100% sure that she got every dime of it back… the knowledge of that kind of trust is something no amount of money can buy.

  4. Grumpy, are you a Heinlein fan?

Posted by Christopher    United States   11/03/2008  at  08:46 PM

  5. Yeppers. Heinlein, Niven and Pratchett are my favorites.

  6. Grumpy, tonight you’re my hero. I am very often disappointed by the people that I meet because I naturally assume that they all have honor and integrity. This is rarely the case, but it sure is nice to read someone’s words and realize they do. Thanks.

I spoke to several people at the bowling alley tonight (we won 5-2, yay!) and learned that this is par for the course. Their advice was that I stop making a special effort, grow some thicker skin, and just tell people that the scores are the scores; they aren’t to be questioned. This is sound advice, but ...

My only other exposure to a position of responsibility in any kind of sports has been my involvement in competitive shooting, and my time spent running the fencing team while I was in college. Honor and honesty are both of paramount importance in those endeavors, more so perhaps than even winning. Maybe it’s a class thing. They have an assumption that you almost need to be English to understand: that the worst thing you could ever do is to have bad manners. Some things are simply not done, and that’s all that need be said. This is not the case in most other aspects of life. But it is in mine. So color me Mr. Naive; even though I turn 48 on Veteran’s Day I am still taken aback, angered, and saddened when I am forced to realize what selfish little dirtbags so many people really are.

So I won’t bother making an issue of this team’s poor behavior. I’ll mention it to our league president, and if he is an upstanding man he will speak to them. If not, then I’ll just ignore their petty bullshit. The scores are correct because I say they are, and I say they are because I have proven it to myself. That is more than enough.

  7. Some days that sammich is on rye, other days on whole wheat. Every now and then on pumpernickel. Best eat it with a pickle.

  8. I have to concur with Grumpy on this one. Let the damn rats twist in the wind. Let it all go.

Life is too damn short, and in the world we live in, it isn’t worth it.

(BTW: I await a reply to the e-mail).

  9. Hmm, All I remember about the two times I was in a bowling league was the question of who was buying the next pitcher of beer and the one time I bowled 11 straight strikes with a spare in the first and twelfth frames.Other than that its all a blur.Good Times

  10. Friend Drew,

Happy to see you haven’t lost that sense of humor even in these trying times.

Man you are funny.  You used Liberal and Logic both in the same line.

    redistribution beneficiaries

And you do have a way with words so all isn’t lost.

Speaking of a way with words, guys here sure are on the money and T. is right.
Life is too damn short. Ah well, mostly it’s short.  For some way past use by date but you’re a bit young for that category.

  11. Rich K - as official league secretary I must inform you that beer may have clouded your recollection. There are only 10 frames in 10-pin bowling. Sorry. Those last two frames were on someone else’s lane. You’re stuck with the 280. You may pick up your “I’m a Victim!” card by the door. LOL

  12. YA YA. As you can see I was writing that at 2am and my powers of math suck anyway. On reflection ( and a few hours sleep) it was a spare in the 1st,then strikes through the tenth with a spare in the 10th. I think it was a 268 but I cant find the old trophy I got for it that had the score etched on it.
