  1. This sort of thing - the policy - is the result of abject cowards who comfort themselves by rationalizing their cowardice.  That rationalization only works by preventing real men and women with some degree of backbone from acting as real men and women with backbone.

Do lawyers play a part?  Sure they do - for a price.

But mostly, it is just cowardice being risen to a life style.

  2. Common sense obviously is no longer a requirement in the banking field.

No wonder the likes of Barney Fwanks runs the House Banking Committee.

    It’s all making sense now.

  3. Bank of drew is using the french way, they have an open bank inside with the tellers sitting behind desks, armoured glass inner and outer doors and it works drews way, if they try to shoot the glass-watch the ricochet!

  4. What everybody said so far. BUT! All of MY banks teller stations would have steel plate under the decorative wood. Why? To control the backblast from the Claymores located right about crotch level.  LOL

  5. During regular business hours the inner door will not open until the outer door is closed.

Hey Drew, your bank is on my mail route!

Not only does FirstDay Financial only allow you to open the inner door after the outer door is closed, getting OUT is the same. (and, for some reason, you can’t wear gloves to get out during the winter. Huhhh?)

At least the out door doesn’t have the metal detector. I always have to deliver FirstDay separately, without carrying my mailbag, because the mailbag sets off the metal detector. Embarrassing, and slows me down while I wait for someone to realize that I’m the mailman.

  6. CM - you have to design your defense/retribution system to minimize collateral damage. Try mounting several scuba diver’s pneumatic spear guns in the floor pointing straight up.

Chris - interesting! FirstDay put a heat sensor in the door lock release mechanism. That forces you to leave a set of fingerprints behind. Not a bad idea at all.

See? There are ways to thwart bank robbers. Some of them might even be legal.

As far as I’m concerned, this Key Bank policy is like wearing a giant “kick me” sign. Or like a ‘gun free school’ sign. They are just about begging for it. “Please rob us! We’ve fired all our brave employees, so don’t worry!”

Oh yeah! So how many of my fingerprints are on there? Be a lot less now that you mention that. Especially after what I saw last week—a guy that likes to wear his trousers at half-mast came in and went out by ‘butting’ the out door.

Don’t think I want to touch it now.

  8. > and got fired for bucking company policy

Of course he did.  I’ve heard a lot of stories like this from various companies who fired employees who fought back against criminals (Pizza Hut anyone?)

All you can do is realize you probably didn’t want to be working for those cowards, anyway.

Although in an economic downturn, getting fired for doing the morally right, and courageous thing is a bitter pill to swallow.

Such policies happily sacrifice life and limb in the name of the company not getting sued.  This is such offensive cowardice, that it deserves an angry public response, and hopefully that will come.  (It’s Seattle though, I’m not holding my breath.)

If I were a Key Bank customer, I think I’d walk in and ask to speak to the bank manager.  “I want teller’s checks cut for the balances of all of my accounts, and I want them closed.  I also want to close out my safety deposit boxes, and I’ll be looking for another bank to move my mortgage and investments to.”

‘What?  But why?  What did we do?’

“You fired Jim Nicholson, who stood up for you, and your customers against a criminal who wanted to rob the bank.  Such cowardice on your company’s part must, and in my case, will be punished.”
