That happened about 4 miles from my sisters place.
Rte-9 is an old State highway, which runs generally North-South from Jersey City to Atlantic city and has lots of strip malls and stores on both sides in that area.
Most Supermarkets tried the 24/7 routine back in the 70’s but found too many bad things happen after midnight, so most altered their hours to close ay midnight and reopen at 6 AM.
They do however employ people to clean and restock the shelves in the 6 hours they’re shut. They also take truck deliveries then.
It sounds to me like an employee got mad at someone and would up shoot two and wacking himself. I doubt it was an armed robbery since the money is generally locked up with no access.
Yes, NJ had very strict gun laws especially with carry conceal permits. However, go to Newark, Paterson, Trenton or Camden to mention a few “lawless” cities in the Garden steate and if you got the coins the guns are there. Most are bought in Virginia (a couple of hours away) and driven up Rte-95 no sweat. Virginia has very lax buy laws so almost anyone with a driver’s licence can buy virtually anything.
Time will tell the real story.

Most of the “illegal guns” in NJ are STOLEN. No citizen of any state may legally buy a firearm in another state directly. You can buy it there, then have it shipped to your local gun shop, and take possession of it back in your home state.
However, it is NOT illegal in almost all the states for any citizen to sell his property to anyone, and guns count as your personal property. So that kind of sale is legal ... even without a driver’s license.
That being the case, there are probably half as many “illegal” guns in NJ as there are “legal” ones ... and I can’t morally convict most of the people who have an “illegal” one; gun control laws are now, and have ALWAYS been, black people control laws. But I CAN morally convict those who use a firearm to commit a crime (other than the major NJ crime of having a firearm w/o the official state paperwork).
I used to manage a crew on night shift in the grocery stores. And half those guys had guns in their pockets ... and all of them were some strange-ass mofos. So I can see the newbie losing his marble - 2 weeks on nights is just the beginning, try it for 4 years - and going off. And maybe if he got fired or sent home he was locked out, and had to shoot his way in through the windows ... or was just a crappy shot? Who knows?
