  1. My uncle covered it, but it was actually written by Merle Travis for Tex Williams. I think my uncle sold more records with it. Maybe the knowledge that you will be forced into a nicotine fit in prison will act as a deterrent to potential criminals. Not a bad idea, non-smoking prisons…

    You’re right. Merle and Tex have the writing credits but the version everyone remembers is the one Jimmy recorded - probably becuse it sold so much more than any of the other covers.

    My favorite cover of that song is by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen (Texas juke joint band that briefly made the big time for aout a year in the early 70’s).
