I believe the 10,000 figure came from the mayor of NOLA. He was just pulling numbers out of his nether regions while shifting blame for his own failures onto others.

Are we still killing 50,000/year on the highways? Even if it’s 40,000 that’s more than 100/day. Where is the outrage? Where are the calls for a ban on roads, automobiles and trucks?
