  1. "I’d say the man should get to keep the money as a penalty for the company’s payroll department being so DAMNED STOOPID. But that’s just my opinion .... I could be wrong.”

    You are.

The disrespect for the rule of law and the rights of others which that crack appears to be founded on is one of the major reasons for the impending collapse of our society!  If you request $10 from the ATM and it spits out $1000 can you keep it?  If the clerk gives you too much in change is it yours?  If he shortchanges you can he keep it?  The wrong answers we so frequently get to these questions are evidence of the death of morals and ethics.  Shame!

Yeah, I know you meant it to be a joke, but it isn’t.  Too many young folks say the same thing without thinking it’s funny—or that it’s wrong!

  2. Give it a rest, Harrison. Of course it was satire. My point was there were TWO mistakes made here: (1) by the company and (2) by the man. He shouldn’t keep the money but should the company bear no blame for their error?

  3. Ummm.  Your first point is clear:  a company should be severely punished for clerical errors!  The second point, that a thief should be punished, is ... um, not ... uh ... there? (Unless it depends on what the meaning . . . no.  Don’t go there, Harrison wink )

Yes, I’m being a *(%&%( here, but _my_ point is that we have to counter the horrendous education our kids are getting by taking care, even in our jokes, to foster respect for property and the rights of others.  Heaven knows they aren’t being taught that in the government schools!

It tears my heart when I ask my college-level business law students if they’re entitled to keep the extra cash the ATM spits out and they overwhelmingly say yes!  And I teach at a Methodist college!
