A few years back I had someone tell me he was worried about an impending draft. I told him I didn’t want one, and I thought the military would be the ones to fight hardest against it.
He asked why, pointed out that the military is having no end of trouble meeting its manning requirements. And I told him that personally I’d rather have a hole that can’t be filled on my flank than someone who didn’t want to be there and was going to duck out when things got ugly.
He’d never been in the military and didn’t really understand, until I said, “You have to realize that if I can’t count on them to stay with me, to go through hell itself to come after me when I’m trapped and wounded, in short if my sorry ass isn’t as important to them as their own.... then IT DOESN’T MATTER how many of them there are.”
THAT’s what makes me proud of these guys. So they aren’t my countrymen, so what? If they were my enemies I’d still admire them. People who WILL NOT back down, WILL NOT abandon their teammates under ANY circumstances… people like that can’t be beaten. You can kill them, but you simply CANNOT defeat them. It’s one hell of an honor to have people like that fighting on your side.
These are the young men and women who make me realize that there really is HOPE for the future of America and Britain.
And GOF, you are right, people who do not know a military person, can’t understand the true connection that military people have for each other - and their country.
Peiper, what DID happen to the rest of that once great nation? I just don’t know. Some of the best mates I had when I was stationed in England were Englishmen.
Wow.
I take my hat off to these men and women.
