And that leads to the question: “Why hasn’t liberalism been declared a mental illness?”
Hey, then we can disarm them using their own laws!
We need a distraction from all this gun noise Drew so how about a story about the Brooklyn bridge and how it made it possible for New Yorker’s to poison the ground in Jersey just by setting foot on it.
Rich, the Brooklyn Bridge connects lower Manhattan to the west end of Long Island. It isn’t anywhere near New Jersey.
However, J.A. Roebling, the guy who built the bridge, started his own iron wire rope company to supply all the cables. His sons ran that company. After Roebling’s death, they also built bridges, and went on to build the Golden Gate Bridge. But before they did that big job, they had a little job just a few miles up the road from me, and built the suspension bridge at Reigelsville across the Delaware River. It still stands, and is a very unique design that uses a double catenary: two cables on each side support the deck, with one larger and one smaller diameter cable. Plus the vertical cables aren’t actually vertical: they are sloped inward; the bridge towers are wider than the deck. This bridge replaced a covered bridge that washed out in the springtime floods of 1903 that destroyed every covered bridge on our part of the river.
The bridge was rehabilitated in 2010 for about $6.3 million, so it ought to be good for another century. Go here for more information and for a bunch of pictures I took of it this past summer.
