  1. That picture looks very familar. I ruined a brand new pair of pants and killed my neighbor’s rose bushes in the exact same manner after bingeing at Denny’s All You Can Eat Bean Burrito Buffet. Fortunately a new coat of paint fixed the rest of the damage. I’m still scraping her windows with a razor balde though…

  2. Explanation: From 400 kilometers above planet Earth, the Expedition 20 Crew onboard the International Space Station (ISS) was able to witness a remarkable event from a remarkable vantage point—the June 12 eruption of the Sarychev Peak Volcano. The active volcano is located in Russia’s Kuril Island chain, stretching to the northeast of Japan. Emphasizing the orbital perspective, this stunning color stereo view was made by combining two images from the ISS and is intended to be viewed with red/blue glasses (red for the left eye). Punching upwards into the atmosphere at an early stage of the eruption, the volcanic plume features a brown column of ash topped with a smooth, bubble-like, white cloud that is likely water condensation. Below, a cloud of denser grey ash slides down the volcanic slope. About 1.5 kilometers of the island coastline is visible at ground level. The evolving ash plume posed no danger to the Expedition 20 crew, but commercial airline flights were diverted away from the region to minimize the danger of engine failures from ash intake.

No space stations were harmed in producing this awesome image:

  3. Nice Chris! Now if I only had a pair of 3-D glasses!

  4. Thanks for that link, Chris. Fascinating photographs.

  5. Big mistaken/propaganda induced “facts” in this post, and especially in the linked bit!

    (1) Volcanos produce many times the C02 that we people produce from all sources.  An eruption like this one will belch out more in a few hours than every human on the planet can produce burning fuels for a lifetime—just one of the many reasons the whole human/CO2/Global warming/cooling/climate change nonsense is… nonsense.

    (2) The biggest greenhouse-gas is water vapor!

    (3) The whole thing is tied to solar activity, but not direct heat from the sun… Solar winds protect our planet from cosmic rays, which produce clouds.  More solar wind means less clouds, and thus more warming from the sun.  LESS solar wind gives us more clouds, which reflect a lot of sunlight into space.

    (4) CO2 levels follow temps up and down—by something like 800 years.  Warming PRECEDES higher CO2 level.  Can someone explain to me how something that FOLLOWS something else could be the CAUSE of the something else?

It’s all about the sun—thinking our SUVs can change anything is the height of hubris!
