I don’t think this is ridiculous at all. Sure, it’s about as small scale as can be, but what we have here is a perfect test case. Are the machine(s) faulty? The legal issue might come from this guy being able to prove how he voted. Maybe he punched the wrong chad and voted for Buchannon by accident, so to speak.
This makes me wonder if the paper trail concept should also go the other way. Cast your vote on the electronic machine and it prints you a receipt. “You are voter number 1342. This is how you voted: ...” You can’t leave the voting both until you’ve verified things. And you have to sign the slip in the presence of the balloting officer to actually get your vote to cast. They don’t need to see your selections - make them below the fold - but they do have to witness your signing and stamp and initial the back. Local law requires you the voter to safely keep the receipt for a year. Then during the counting, several dozen citizens are called at random to come down to town hall with their receipts to validate the results. Each is given a small stipend, say $100 cash tax free, by the county for their trouble.
Hey, this could work! The word would get out so fast that the machines are legit, and if only one error shows up then all the results for that machine are forfeit (and all those particular ballot workers get fired). It would cost just about nothing to implement too, just a few rolls of receipt tape and some stamp pad ink.
